Warriors For Lucas

Donation protected
Hi, my name is Michelle and I am a Warrior for Lucas. A few months ago Lucas had a tonsil that was about the size of a golf ball. This was making it hard for him to swallow (and breath). When he told his mom, Sara, about it she took a look. No 12 year old boy likes to have his mom peering in his mouth, but that is just what she did. Sara saw the size of the tonsil and immediately scheduled a time to see the doctor. At the appointment the doctor said that he had never seen anything quite like it. He was sent to Children's Hospital in Omaha for a course of antibiotics and steroids to attempt to reduce the size and hopefully rid him of the bacteria that was in there. After a couple of days it was evident that that wasn't working. They sent Lucas home and scheduled for him to have a tonsillectomy (not a fun way to spend your 12th birthday). But he is such a positive kid that he was fine with it. The surgery went well and the tonsil was sent off for biopsy.

Fast forward about a week. The call came back from the biopsy and Sara was notified that Lucas has non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. I can't imagine what it is like for a family to hear that your baby has CANCER! To the credit of Children's, there was a plan immediately in place. In just a couple of days Lucas had his port put in and he was receiving his first round of chemo. Needless to say, Lucas took it like a champ and never once complained. He is WAY too tough for any of that! He spent a couple of days in the hospital but his numbers and blood counts were still pretty good, so he got to go home. Really, he just wanted to go back to school. After a couple of days he got to do just that.

Lucas only got to spend a couple of days actually "going" to school. Unfortunately is numbers dropped some and he couldn't risk being around the other kids (even with his mask and all of the caution he is taking). He has recently endured spinal taps, bone marrow draws, blood draws, and any other possible poking and prodding you can imagine. But again...NO COMPLAINING! He is currently at Children's for another round of chemo and of course more testing.

Lucas and his mom know this is going to be a very very long journey, but they will take it head on like they do everything in life. Sara is a single mom and has had to put aside some working hours to be with Lucas.

We live in a very small community and are VERY VERY CLOSE! When I talked to Sara about setting up this page (she is a pretty private person so it wasn't easy for her), I told her that there are so many of us that feel totally helpless in this fight of theirs and that this would maybe help us feel like we can do something for them both. These funds will not only be used for medical expenses, but to help supplement the lost income from Sara missing work to be with her little man.

Please consider donating. No child should have to go through this, but I can say that if there is one out there that can whip this thing, it is Lucas. He is truly a WARRIOR!!!!!!
