EMERGENCY UPDATE 10/28/17: This family desperately needs more help!
Since Eddie's last emergency surgery he has contracted sepsis and MRSA, both are life threatening aggressive infections. He had to have an emergency flight back to Indianapolis to get the care he needed.
He had 2 emergency surgeries due to complications and will still need more. This brings him to 16+ surgeries to date.
Now he is in a special rehab facility for 1-4 months. He must stay in Indianapolis to be close to his doctors, and to receive the care he desperately needs.
These unforeseen problems have increased their, already overwhelming financial burden, they could lose their house on top of all this. Please help anyway you can; financially, thoughts and prayers, cards and letters, or personally contact Eddie or Nancy and share encouragement. PLEASE HELP!

"New Leg for Eddie"
(Eddie was the victim of a robbery and took a devastating shot gun blast to the knee)
I am one of Eddie's many friends and I would like to ask for your help on Eddie's behalf. If you've breifly met Eddie just once, he considers you his friend forever.
Anyone who knows Eddie (Eduardo) Madrigal knows he is a very kind and caring person. He is always ready to help a friend, or a stranger for that matter. Now, Eddie needs our help. He is going to have a very big surgery in June to amputate his damaged leg and prepare him for a prosthetic leg. This will be a long and extremely complicated surgery, which will require Eddie to travel to Carmel Indiana to the doctor who specializes in this procedure. Needless to say, even with insurance the operation and prosthetic leg will cost Eddie and his family an out of pocket minimum of $80,000, and more likely $100,000-$150,000 or more, depending on the rehab, length of recovery, back and forth travel expenses, and any additional complications, or unforeseen expenses he may incur.
Some of you may not know Eddie's story. I will briefly share with you the event that changed Eddie’s life, and the consequences of that event. In 2009 Eddie was the victim of an armed robbery gone wrong. Eddie was helping a friend get groceries out of the car and carry them into the house, when a man armed with a shot gun came out of the house demanding money and their car keys. The robber shot Eddie in the leg at close range with the shot gun. The shooter was preparing to shoot again, but by the grace of God he continued to fumble and drop the shells he was trying to load into the barrel of the gun. The shot gun blast totally destroyed Eddie’s knee and part of the femur bone above the knee. The damage from the shot gun was so extensive that Eddie needed to be immediately rushed to Harborview.
The next year was filled with surgery after surgery in desperate attempts to relieve the constant and excruciating pain. He had six failed surgeries attempting to reconstruct the knee, and two additional surgeries to clean up the remaining bullet fragments, remove the reconstructive screws and plates, and to replace lost bone with cadaver bone grafts.
In 2011 Eddie endured another surgery, once again hoping to relieve the debilitating pain. This time the doctors surgically implanted a rod extending from his hip to his ankle; locking his knee in place. Initially the operation gave Eddie a little relief. The slight relief in pain cost Eddie in other areas. The operation left him with one leg 3 ½ inches shorter, a knee that cannot bend, and still the need for constant pain medication, which caused severe stomach problems. As time went on the side effect of placing the rod in his leg continued to cause more and more pain and difficulties for Eddie. He is having progressively worse back and hip pain, and the uneven leg is now causing problems in his good knee as well. Eddie cannot remain in any one position very long, which makes the most simple things painful and difficult; riding in a car, sitting in a movie theater with his son, walking, standing, sleeping, climbing a ladder, absolutely everything is more difficult and more painful for Eddie than it is for most of us. I don’t think any of us can imagine being in constant pain day in and day out with no relief available to us, or hope of relief.
Fortunately, Eddie has renewed hope from a doctor specializing in this type of traumatic injury. Dr. Ertl specializes in reconstruction for gunshot and shrapnel wounds and has helped many injured military men and women with similar type injuries. Even Heather Mills, the actress on Dancing with the Stars, had Dr Ertl reconstruct her leg. This operation and prosthetic leg will allow Eddie to use his own mind to control the leg, he will essentially be able to do everything everyone else can do, climb a tree, ride a bike, play with his son, or anything else his heart desires. Eddie has had test after test and trip after trip to Seattle’s Harborview and University of Washington hospitals preparing for these surgeries. Eddie and his wife Nancy just recently received the call telling them Eddie had a surgery date, and this was no longer a dream, but a reality. Eddie, Nancy and Josiah fly to Indiana June 13th, meet the doctor on the 14th, first surgery (10 hours) on the 16th and final surgery on the 20th, followed by 2-4 weeks of rehab.
Although this complicated operation is a little scary, it is truly an answered prayer for Eddie. This operation affords Eddie hope. Hope that he can do everything he wants to do with his son Josiah, whom he absolutely adores and is completely devoted to. Hope that he can be more productive and lead a more full busy life. Hope that he can do all the little things each of us takes for granted. I’m asking that you show your support for Eddie, Nancy, and Josiah with a generous financial gift, or support them with continued prayers, and positive thoughts sent their way. Any way you can support Eddie and his family is greatly appreciated. If the saying “What goes around, comes around” is accurate, then Eddie is in great shape because he is genuinely one of the happiest, most thoughtful and generous people I’ve met.
Thank you and let’s work together to change Eddies life, this time for the better!!
