Laura’s Road to Recovery

My mom was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic breast cancer in April of 2017. This will be the second time my mom has fought breast cancer. She is being treated at City of Hope and was apart of a clinical trial. However one of the trial medications gave my mom pneumonitis and she was hospitalized for a week.
     She has been receiving the standard of care mediations which basically helps her cancer not grow or get any worse. She began living a normal life before things turned for the worse and my mom caught the flu. Because my mom has a compromised immune system this flu virus put her in the hospital for an entire month. On April 15, 2018 my mom could hardly breath on her own so she was intubated. This came as a shock to everyone because we had no idea her condition was so bad.
     My mom was in the ICU on life support for an entire week, doctors told me she may not be able to come off life support because her lungs were in such bad shape. I made the decision as her healthcare proxy to keep her on life support for a few days, hoping for a miracle to happen because I was not ready to loose my mom. God answered all of our prayers and began to heal my mom. She was extubated April 21, 2018.  I cannot begin to describe all the support my mom received while she was on life support, so many loved ones came to show my mom they were all behind her. And we received so many prayers I cannot begin to thank everyone from the bottom of my heart.
    My mom is on the road to recovery, because of her strength she was able to survive a life altering situation. Because of her condition she is not able to work. And although my mom does receive some help because of her health problems, her medical bills began to pile up while she was hospitalized for an entire month.
