Stand with Nicole

Please allow us to introduce ourselves. We are the Stand with Nicole campaign committee and we sincerely hope this letter finds you well! We are seeking your support with a fundraiser to help Londoner, Nicole Turner, raise enough money to purchase a wheelchair that would allow her to stand or sit independently. Additionally, we are hoping to raise awareness regarding the lack of funding available to people who require assistive devices to enhance their quality of life. We plan to use any additional funds not needed for Nicole’s wheelchair to develop a fund to help more people acquire mobility devices they need. Here is a little more information about Nicole, the wheelchair, and this campaign.

About Nicole
Nicole is a young woman with a passion for music, helping others, and pursuing social justice. She recently graduated with her Masters in Social Work and is currently working with children and youth living with autism, as well as their families, to support them in accessing services to empower them to actualize their potentials. Outside of work, Nicole is a drummer in the band, Trainwreck, which is working to release their first album. She loves attending concerts, engaging in activism, volunteering with various organizations, and pushing her limits through exercise! Nicole ultimately hopes to have a career in policy change and advocacy, with the goal of creating a society where everyone has equitable opportunities to meaningfully participate in their communities. This said, she also has a disability known as cerebral palsy. This restricts her ability to walk independently, meaning she sits in her wheelchair for approximately 15 hours per day due to her busy schedule. Having the option to stand would not only improve her physical health, but it would greatly enhance Nicole's quality of life as it would enable her to engage with peers at eye level, reducing the stigma associated with using a wheelchair.

About The Chair
Most wheelchairs are fairly limited in their ability to allow users to change their position throughout the day, which can lead to significant physical health concerns and, at times, a decrease in mental health. The F5 Corpus VS chair is different! According to the manufacturer's, Permobil, website, this unique piece of equipment allows users to stand and drive which "provides an array of benefits from social interactions like being able to talk to someone face-to-face to positive health outcomes like greater pressure relief and improve circulatory, GI and respiratory systems.” Though the government will fund a portion of the wheelchair, there are significant costs that will not be covered because certain aspects of the device are not viewed as a necessity. The total cost of the chair is approximately $40,000 if we are unable to acquire additional funding. Again, any extra money raised will be used to help others get mobility devices they need!

Stand with Nicole’s Goals
Our campaign has two main hopes. First, we are aiming to raise enough funding to ensure Nicole can afford to purchase the F5 Corpus VS to not only further enhance her quality of life, but to support her in achieving her personal and professional aspirations. Secondly, as Nicole felt uncomfortable with raising money to purchase something that she perceived would only benefit her, we hope to build awareness around the challenges people living with disabilities experience around trying to acquire equipment they need to lead independent, dignified, and meaningful lives. Should this campaign surpass its fundraising target, the additional money will go towards creating an annual bursary to assist individual in obtaining any assistive devices they may need.
