Hi everyone. My name is Alex and I am Cody's mum. Cody's dad and I are looking to raise funds to cover his medical bills to have a benign brain tumour removed from his brain stem that has been there since birth. The tumour was discovered by MRI on 1 July this year.
On 24 June this year, I picked Cody up off the school bus and he was squinting one eye. My sharp mother's intuition told me straight away that my child was not himself. I asked him whats wrong, why is he squinting one eye? He replied with, mummy I am seeing double. I said, does it stop when you close one eye? He said yes.
I was already at the shops where there is an optometrist. I vacillated over optometrist or GP first. Then made a decision to take him straight to my GP. Our GP examined Cody then referred us to an optometrist the following day.
Cody had a really long sleep that night. Approximately 14 hours. When he woke up his left eye had turned in and to date there has been no change and he is still seeing double. We learnt from the MRI that Cody's tumour haemorraged, causing the 6th nerve palsy and he was admitted into Westmead Children's Hospital for 1 week and was given steroids to reduce the swelling.
After receiving a second opinion, we have decided it would be in Cody's best interest to put our trust and faith in Neurosurgeoun Dr Charlie Teo and have the tumour removed so Cody doesn't have any future bleeds that may put him at risk of having a stroke and he can continue to live life, get back on his BMX and his KTM and enjoy being a kid again. I believe Cody has been really lucky in this instance.
