Hi everyone, my name is Bailey and I am Keegan's first cousin. I am organizing the GoFundMe to raise money for Keegan's long road to recovery.
Keegan was traveling in Vietnam when he was in a diving accident off the beaches of Nha Trang on Sunday, October 12 or Monday, October 13 (still unclear exactly when the injury was sustained), in which he broke his C5, C6, and C7 vertebrae and also had a compressed spinal cord.
Keegan underwent surgery Wednesday morning (local time) in a very small, unsanitary hospital in Nha Trang, which was not very well equipped to perform the surgery but believe it went about as well as it could have (we will know more soon). We are very grateful that it went well as the care and hygiene at the hospital were next to nothing. (Keegan could not be transferred prior to surgery as there was no way to properly immobilize him and the risk of making things worse was too great.)
Keegan now has his girlfriend Ruby and both of his parents, Randy and Tammy, by his side and has since been transferred to a much bigger and more equipped international hospital in Nha Trang, and his spirits are much brighter.
The care, cleanliness, and professionalism have been incredible at the new hospital. They have gone above and beyond and will be performing new CT, X-ray, and MRI scans in the upcoming hours to determine the next steps in Keegan's care plan as the previous hospital is not releasing medical statements and has waived all liability.
Keegan currently has some movement in all four limbs, which is a very good sign, with his right side being more concerning at the moment (side of impact).
- Keegan currently has good movement in his left leg and can wriggle his toes.
- He has some upward movement in the right leg, but the swelling in the area is currently making it very difficult, and he cannot wriggle his right toes at all.
- Keegan can lift both of his arms over his shoulders but cannot move his fingers or squeeze his hands.
At this point, there is still so much unknown, and it is way too early to know what his healing journey will look like or how long everyone will be in Vietnam and off work before we can get him home to Canada.
We do know it will be a very long road to recovery, which will come with a ton of expenses. We are hoping to raise money for Keegan and his family so they can put all of their energy into healing and not have to worry about the financial costs of the journey ahead.
We are so incredibly thankful for all of the help from everyone (including complete strangers), positive energy, well wishes, and thousands of prayers that have come Keegan's way during this incredibly difficult and stressful time, and we want to thank everyone ahead of time for your continued support and well wishes on the path to recovery ahead! <3
*** Also - as you can see the donations will all go to Kiah Waryan's account (Keegans sister) as they do not have access to their bank accounts in Vietnam at the moment ***
