On April 2, at around 8:30 am, Vaghinak Grigoryan was killed while walking to school by Azerbaijani BM-21 Grand shelling in the town of Martuni, Nagorno Karabakh Republic. His twin brother Gevorg Grigoryan was wounded.
This fund will be directly sent to parents of Vaghinak in Martuni to help pay for funeral expenses and help parents raise Vaghinak’s twin brother.
My wife and I were born in Shahumyan region of Nagorno Karabakh and when the war started in 1991 were about the same age as Vaghinak. On January 5th 1992, Shahumyan was first town to be shelled with Grad multiple launch missiles by Azerbaijan. On that day alone 3 adult civilians and 2 kids were killed. Throughout the war Azerbaijan indiscriminately shelled all towns and villages of Nagorno Karabakh Republic with Grad missiles, which mostly killed civilians and kids. The aim of the shelling was to frighten and kill civilians so that they would flee. On March 25th 1992, my own 79 year old grandfather, Shmavon Divanyan was killed by Grad missile.
After more than 20 years, on April 2nd, Azerbaijan again started shelling peaceful towns on Nagorno Karabakh Republic. The first victim of Grad missile was Vaghinak Grigoryan who was simply walking to school with his twin brother. Vaghinak was born in de-facto independent republic and has never met or seen an Azerbaijani , but his life was cut short by the government and armed forces of Azerbaijan, who want to deny any Armenian to peacefully exist on the territory of Nagorno Karabakh Republic.
The first aim of this fundraising is to help pay funeral costs for the family of Vaghinak. It is customary to give money to the family when such tragedies occur. In Armenian tradition, sometimes the entire town attends funerals and family provides a meal afterwards. There are also large gatherings of relatives and mourners on 40th days and 1 year anniversary. Finally, families spend large amount of money to install a granite monument.
The second aim is to help Vaginak’s twin brother who survived the Grad shelling. Parents should never lose a child, but raise them into worthy human beings. I hope Vaginak’s parents will never experience such tragedy again and will focus on razing his twin brother into an adult that they wish him to be.
Please consider giving as small as you may pay for a day’s Starbucks coffee or as much as your heart desires. I would like to be able to reach the stated funding goal by May 7th.
Please share with friends on social media and ask others to contribute.
The funding will only be send directly in the name of the parent of Vaghinak via money gram or bank transfer. There will be no other intermediaries.
Lusine Musayelyan, jornalist at RFE/RL and NKR representative from Stepanakert will help facilitate communication to the parents in Martuni. The list of names of all contributors showing amount of contribution will also be given to the parents.
