Hi…My name is Jael, my sister's name is Jasmine and, after 3 years of fighting, our mom lost her battle with stage 4, metastatic breast cancer the morning of November 8, 2022. Only going to the hospital to receive care for a pain in her side, my mom, my sister, and I thought she’d be home that evening, but instead found out she had a blockage in her liver, possibly from the overwhelming amount of medication she’d been taking, and her kidneys had begun to fail. Surgery couldn’t be performed for her kidneys because of the breast cancer, the breast cancer couldn’t be treated with chemo any longer because of the kidneys. She was in the hospital for about a month before she came home on home hospice care under the main supervision of my sister and myself and then transferred to a hospice facility for more professional care after a few terrifying events. She passed peacefully and pain free in her sleep with a dear friend of hers by her side.
As the months have gone by, bills and collection notices continue to pile up and the only piece of her estate to claim is the home we’ve lived in for 26 years. After 30 years of serving in the US Navy, retiring as a Chief Petty Officer, my mom continued to work as a an accreditation manager in the Wellstar Health System. She retired nearly 2 years into her breast cancer diagnosis and had 1 life insurance policy. Nearly all of it went towards funeral expenses; the rest was split between my sister and I. She worked so hard for this house we’ve called home and I’m determined to fight to keep it from being taken from us.
Myself, my 3 year old son, whom she adored, and my 5 month old son, who only got to meet his Nana once before she passed, lived together with my mom. Upon her death, she owed $93,000 on the home. I have been paying the mortgage monthly and it is current. However, her medical and credit card debts far exceed the value of the home; the largest being her final hospital bill at $460,000.
My children and I are in danger of being homeless after putting every dollar I have left towards probate lawyer fees and bills I wasn’t at all prepared for. I’m doing everything I can to hold on to our home, but I’ve come to my last resort in asking for donations and reaching out for help before it’s too late. I’m hoping to prevent my children and I from becoming destitute especially in the midst of such a horrible housing market and unaffordable child care costs. If I can’t figure out how to save our home, I hope to at least be able to start over with dignity.
My goal is to pay off as much of the home as possible, as I’m certain I’ll be denied financing and negotiate settlements for the bills owed.
I’ve set a goal amount, but I thank you for anything ❤️ if you could also share this fundraiser with others who you think may like to help, it would be greatly appreciated!
