You never think the worse will happen to your beloved pet until it does. My 3-year-old pup, Maya, was taken to the emergency vet and was diagnosed with an open-cervix pyometra, a life-threatening infection of her uterus. The vet told me if she didn't have the surgery she would have died. They also required just under $8,000 or they wouldn't operate. Of course I chose to save the life of my baby, but a medical bill that large completely broke the bank.
