Hello everyone,
This is something I never thought I’d have to do. But, it could be for a more deserving person. My step father, Roy Sullivan, is probably one of the most caring and hard working people I have ever met. He married my mother when I was a teenager, and accepted me as his own and treats me as such. I even consider him to be a second father to me, while still having my biological father in my life. He’s an avid fisherman and outdoorsman, he’s a machine junkie and a snack enthusiast. He loves scary movies and is never one to hesitate to put in some manual labor when it’s needed. While he is a stubborn old man, he’s got a big heart. Many times have I fallen on hard periods, and every single time he doesn’t hesitate to tel my mother to help me. And I feel now it is my turn to return the favor.
Roy works as a mechanic for a trucking company in Houston, and has done so longer than I have been alive. He braves the harsh Houston summers and works himself nearly to death just to support my mother, who is physically disabled, and himself. The years of working hard have taken a toll on his body, and they finally caught up to him.
Tuesday, June 7th he was admitted to the hospital with severe pain in his lower back. He had previously been diagnosed with herniated discs in his lower lumbar and was seeing a pain management specialist for his issues with his lower back. During a procedure, something occurred which we aren’t 100% sure what happened, but it hospitalized him. The pain so severe that the only thing the doctors to give him to ease his pain was fentanyl. Since then he has seen numerous doctors and surgeons to which they finally concluded he needed to have a forinotomy(I could spend the time explaining it but if you’d like more info on the procedure go to the link here). Not only that, but they are also debating fusing his spine in that area.
This procedure will put him on his back and in recovery anywhere from 6 to 12 months. He is the sole provider in their household, and the process to draw his retirement could take weeks or even months if we are lucky. While he has insurance to pay for the medical procedures, they have bills to pay and expenses to cover. His time off is running out and their runway could very well dry up in as little as a month. We are in the process of trying to seek early social security retirement, but that also can take months if not longer.
We are never the type to ask for help, and we are always the people who refuse help even if we are in desperate need of it. Even if we receive we all feel it would be necessary to pay each and every person back who provides their assistance. My mother does have income, but it’s only enough to cover her monthly medical expenses and it is fixed. She is unfortunately not allowed to work, but she is also doing what she can to support them; selling personal items.
Thank you for your time, even reading makes us happy you took the time to understand our appreciation and love of Roy.
