On October 7th, my best friend, Lisa Niebergall, and her daughter, Joy were involved in a serious head-on car accident caused by a drunk driver. They were both taken to the hospital with substantial injuries. Lisa with a life-altering leg injury and Joy with (3) torn ligaments in her ankle.
Lisa’s ankle was crushed by the impact of the accident resulting in a compound open fracture that required two surgeries totaling 13 hours, and the use of plates and rods to stabilize her leg and ankle. She spent the following 11 days in the hospital. Although she recently returned home, this is only the start of her long road to recovery. She is taking one day at a time, however at this time it is unknown whether she will ever walk without pain again.
Joy who has Autism is struggling to cope with the terror and trauma from the accident. The hidden psychological impact may be more serious than her ankle injury. She is being watched closely to help aid during her recover process. Joy has trouble managing crutches, she relies on using a mobility scooter and a wheelchair to move around.
Before the accident Joy participated in a cheer performance for cheerleaders with special needs. Despite all the challenges Joy realized just how much she loves her cheer family and requested to be with them just 2 days after the accident. Joy is currently waiting on medical release before returning to the cheer floor. For now, she is learning the team’s new modified routine that will allow her to participate using a wheelchair.
Lisa is a strong woman. A woman of Faith. She loves serving others, works in ministry and volunteers for home health care. She has a special place in her heart for those she ministers to and watches over. Prior to the accident Lisa was ready to re-enter the work force and with a final interview schedule for the Tuesday following the accident. Unfortunately, as a result of the accident she had to turn the job down and will no longer be able to work for the upcoming months ahead. Lisa now focuses on healing and staying positive on her road to recover. She will most likely undergo at least 1 more surgery.
Prior to the accident, Lisa took care of the needs of the family, she did the grocery shopping, she cared for her daughter and handled the day-to-day tasks of running the household all while maintaining her very busy schedule outside of the home. Today, she is bound to the wheelchair and unable to handle some of life’s basic skills. Their world has been turned upside down! This accident rocked me as much as it did Lisa, her husband Kevin, her daughter Joy and the rest of her 5 children.
In the end, we are grateful they are alive. They need our help. Please consider a donation of any amount to help Lisa and her family get through this tragedy and allow the family to go into the holiday season with some relief from the financial stress of medical bills.
Sincerely,
Colleen Beecher
