This afternoon, a severe storm passsed through Worcester unexpectedly. My mom went out to move my parent's vehicle and within moments of entering the car, strong winds knocked over a large tree in our yard, crushing the hood and front window and nearly ending her life. In true Schaeffer-Duffy fashion, she called me and mentioned nonchalantly that a tree had fallen on the car and asked if I was alright. It was only when I came to the house that I realized how close of a call it really was.
The important part of this story is that my mom is ok. I think it's a sign that God knows how much we all need her that she escaped this near-tragedy unscathed. But the car is destroyed and unfortunately, there's no insurance coverage for a tree falling on your car (at least, not on my parent's plan.) This vehicle is incredibly important, not just as the only car for their household but the only car for the Ss. Francis and Therese Catholic Worker Community. This car transports bread to be sold each week at local churches which supports my parents work for peace and justice. It gives guests rides to the hospital, to job interviews, and to new housing and new lives. It carries South High students on my dad's cross country team who wouldn't be able to participate in sports if they didn't have a coach that would pick them up.
My dad's friend Carl says that any problem that can be solved with money is just an inconvenience. Let's help them get through this one and say a big THANK YOU that Claire Schaeffer-Duffy is still with us! Hooray!
Love,
Grace
