Robins Story

As many of you know, our Mom, Robin, has suffered from an incident that has changed our family forever. After months of suffering from back pain, Robin started losing feeling in her legs this past fall. We rushed her to the hospital on Sunday October 29th, where the MRI showed a fracture in her T11 vertebrae, and the fracture was pushing into her spinal cord. The doctors performed emergency spinal surgery on Monday, October 30th to fuse the vertebrae and put in rods and plates. They warned us that she may not have any feeling in her legs and walking might not be a possibility. The first week in the hospital, Robin had no feeling from the waist down and we were given the news that her breast cancer had returned after being cancer free for 14 years and metastasized into her back.
She was transferred to Kessler Rehabilitation, where she remained inpatient for the next 6 weeks. She can now feel when you touch her leg and toes, she can wiggle her toes and can even lift her legs slightly from the knee – this is all amazing progress and she is giving her therapy 150% every minute as the strong and courageous woman we all know her to be.
Robin has a long road to recovery ahead of her, but we are all keeping the faith that we’ll get our strong matriarch back to herself.
Against Robin’s original thoughts, we are reaching out to our network for help – there are things that no one plans for financially, especially in circumstances like this. We are going to need home modifications to be made to make her house wheelchair friendly, including widening doorways, adding a shower to the first floor, and hopefully adding a chair lift, so she can access her 2nd floor bedroom eventually.
Our mom is the most self-less person we know – she’s sacrificed so much for her family and we just want to make her comfortable and give her everything she needs as she continues on her healing journey. We ask for your support to aid us in the costs of the home modifications, as well as some additional nursing aid hours for the coming months as health insurance unfortunately doesn’t support any of the above needs. We thank you so much for your help!!
