A little over nine years ago, our school set out on an adventure to create a performing arts program that would pride itself on diversity and inclusivity. We are proud to say that the theatre program has successfully reached over 1600 students and continues today to exceed all expectations. Students have mesmerized sold-out audiences for nearly a decade showcasing all students on stage.
In 2015, a thespian troupe was established with the International Thespian Society. Even though this is not a magnet school, the level of performance has caught the eyes of community leaders and district personnel. In 2019, our troupe was invited to perform at the first School Board Meeting for the school year 2019-2020. Impressing the Superintendent with their performance of Bohemian Rhapsody, Mr. Carvalho, requested the troupe perform at the Superintendent’s Bahamas Benefit Concert. For the last two years, the troupe has been district thespian festival champions. In 2020, they went on to state competition where they were named Florida State Thespian Festival Champions. We are also proud to say we have students that have been accepted to dozens of magnet programs around the county including, Miami Arts Studio at Zelda Glazer and New World School of the Arts.
The troupe’s accomplishments are in great part possible from the support of the public. With the help of our community partnership with The Home Depot, a stage was built in our covered patio. Currently, we are preparing to perform 15 musical theatre numbers at district festival and then moving on to state competition. Including transportation, registration, accommodations, and meals, the cost of this four-day trip is $18,000. We need financial assistance to subsidize the cost of state competition for students. Trying to return to a sense of normalcy post-COVID has proven quite challenging in our schools. Students suffer mental health issues at alarming rates, and they are in need more than ever, of programs that foster creativity and a sense of purpose. The arts programs in education are essential for children.
Any financial contribution that you can make to help pay for the state competition trip will be greatly appreciated. Thank you for all the support you have given this school throughout the years.
