Hi . My name is Julie and I’m raising funds for my friend Capri. My very dear friend and coworker, Capri has had a very challenging year. As a 33-year-old, single mother to two wonderful children (Mariah, 13 & Matthew, 7), Capri has chosen to place her own health priorities aside to help her 7-year-old son receive the treatment he needs due to extensive financial burdens.
Matthew has been facing health problems of his own affecting his quality of life as a young growing boy. In early May this year, Matthew was diagnosed with plaque psoriasis, vitiligo, and rheumatoid arthritis which has primarily affected both his knees and ankles. This has impacted his ability to run and play like kids his age are supposed to do. His treatment plan has been complicated by insurance denials and a systematic process that has taken nearly 6 months for approval of a medication that can truly treat his condition.
In late May of this year, Capri was faced with her own health problems which required her to take a leave of absence from work. Capri was diagnosed with a rare, painful & incurable condition called May-Thurners syndrome which causes blood clot formation within the pelvic veins. To prevent life-threatening complications, Capri has been placed on blood thinners to prevent further blood clot formation. She will also require surgery for stent placement to prevent additional life-threatening complications. Her treatment for this condition became problematic as she experienced hemorrhaging, requiring many hospitalizations for multiple blood transfusions.
During a hospitalization in June 2022, Capri was diagnosed with Thyroid Cancer. On September 19th of this year, Capri underwent total removal of her thyroid gland and surrounding lymph nodes. Some of you may know, this gland is a vital hormone gland that helps regulate metabolism and virtually affects every organ and system of the body. For the body to function properly, those without a thyroid gland require life-long medication to maintain good health.
Her recovery since has been an uphill battle, Capri has lost a significant amount of weight and has been struggling to improve her nutritional status as she currently has esophageal tears that cause excruciating pain with swallowing making eating very difficult with additional bleeding related to the blood thinners she’s on for her May-Thurners syndrome.
Capri recently discovered that she no longer has short-term disability and has exhausted all of her PTO with her Dialysis employer. She is unable to apply for Long Term Disability until December of this year. Not only does she have the burden of paying for the cost of her own prescriptions and hospital bills, but she has also prioritized her son’s medication costs and treatments so he can try to live a more comfortable & “normal” 7-year-old life. Capri is no longer receiving any income and the costs of healthcare, medications, mortgage, and other expenses have become exceptionally overwhelming.
Capri is one of the strongest, hardest working, most selfless people I have ever known. She is always there to give her love and support to anyone that needs it.
Now, it is her turn we return this love and support to Capri and her children. Anything you can donate will truly be appreciated. Everything we can do to help surround her with love and support is essential so she can focus on healing and regaining her strength. Please spread the word. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
