I am fundraising for a serious condition that can affect anyone. It is called Arteriovenous Malformation. Lucas went to bed with a severe headache on September 1st, 2021. Unfortunately, his family did not know that he was suffering from a brain hemorrhage as there were no other physical signs. Lucas was admitted and transported to three different hospitals before Dr.'s could identify the problem and begin to help him.
An arteriovenous malformation (AVM) is a tangle of abnormal blood vessels connecting arteries and veins in the brain. These arteries are responsible for taking oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the brain. Veins carry the oxygen-depleted blood back to the lungs and heart. A brain AVM disrupts this vital process.
An arteriovenous malformation can develop anywhere in your body but often occurs in the brain or spine. Brain AVMs are rare and affect less than 1 percent of the population.
Complications of a brain AVM include:
-Bleeding in the brain (hemorrhage)
-Reduced oxygen to brain tissue
-Thin or weak blood vessels
-Brain damage
After three long days of diagnosis and treatments, including a Cerebral Arteriography, Computerized Tomography Scans and MRIs, Lucas underwent a brain surgery called Endovascular Embolization. This included injecting the arteries in his brain with "medical glue" and "metal materials" to block the hemorrhagic site.
Finally, after a month and a half of not seeing his family due to the Covid-19 rules in the hospital, Lucas was released under the care of his wife, where he could finally be with their three children. Unfortunately, he cannot return to work, and his wife stays home to take care of him 24/7. He continues to improve slowly but continues to see Dr's and specialists weekly, including Neurosurgeons, Neurologists, Otolaryngologists, Somnologist and Ophthalmologists.
Lucas has a long road to recovery, and there is hard work ahead for the loving family of five.
