My mother-in-law had hip replacement surgery back in November, and all was going well with recovery until recently when they discovered she had an infection in the hardware. Unfortunately, the infection is not treatable with antibiotics, and her brand new hip must be completely removed. She has to have IV antibiotics and will be almost completely immobile without a hip for 3 months.

Her doctor said she MUST be in a wheelchair and a handicap accessible rehab or respite facility for the full 3 months, as she cannot go up and down stairs, cannot walk to the bathroom, cannot step into a shower, and cannot even stand on her own. She will also need daily IV antibiotics, along with extensive wound care to kill the infection.

Once the infection is cleared, she will be able to have new hip hardware placed so she will be even better than she was before. This will require yet another surgery and more time in a rehab facility. Her hope at the end of all of this is for her to be even more mobile than she was prior, and to have a better quality of life.

After much back and forth, her insurance company will only cover 20 days. That means that she has to come up with the other 70 days out of pocket. Originally, she had a handicap accessible place lined up to stay with a friend, but unfortunately, that fell through at the last minute.

With less than a week to go before the surgery, our family is now scrambling to pool together all available funds to cover as much as we can for the respite facility for the remaining 70 days. None of us were prepared to cover this cost, as we all thought the stay was completely set.

My mother-in-law is an extraordinarily selfless woman and does not deserve to have to deal with any of this. The medical part alone is incredibly trying and unfair, let alone the additional financial strain.

This is where we need your help. Due to the high level of care needed, the cost is extraordinarily expensive, and even with all of us combining our emergency funds, we cannot cover it all.

All funds raised will go directly to the respite house expenses, with any extra going to additional hospital and surgery costs.

Thank you in advance for your generosity and blessings.
