Most people call me Cindy, my favorite people call me Grandma or Mom...
Wilder calls me Grandma!
Wilder's Wild Adventure with Leukemia:
It all started on Tuesday January 23rd, from urgent care, with an ambulance ride to the Children's Hospital in Aurora, Colorado which led to... the test results: T-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (T-ALL). They have already started chemo and there has been vast improvement in the symptoms that led to the ambulance ride. The first month will be the most challenging time, and the first 6 months of chemo will be the most intensive. The treatments will continue for 2 1/2 years.
Over these next two and a half years there will be many challenges and difficult days for this spunky seven year old who has a huge imagination, strong voice, and is an all-in Pokemon fan. Wilder will endure and win this battle, but will have to face some very hard days.
Conversations have already been had about hair loss which was responded to by they would prefer not to! (Wilder is non-binary and uses they/them pronouns).
As you can well imagine, over the course of the next 2 1/2 years there will be many foreseen and unforeseen expenses that occur to help Wilder return to full health! Already, the day after coming home from the hospital, an unplanned trip had to be made back to the hospital due to a fever, to make sure all the blood counts were still above where they needed to be. They live 60 miles from the hospital.
Insurance deductibles, medical supplies, missed days of work, travel expenses, cost of household supplies never needed before, specialty items (clothing, fun hats/fun wigs), activities for during treatment time and sick days… It all starts to snowball into a bigger sum than families should have to handle on their own. That’s why they have us… family, friends, people who care!
Helen Keller said it best, “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much” Together let’s see how much we can do to help ease the financial burden from this family so they can focus on getting Wilder healthy!
Wilder is 7 years old and a 2nd grader at Georgetown Community School.
Wilder has an older sister Whittier (9), and two dogs, Mazzy and Bilbo Waggins.
