Hello friends,
My name is Veronica Blaire. I am 27 years old. I grew up as a healthy girl with an active lifestyle. My hobbies include riding horses, dancing, art, reading, hiking and spending time out of doors. I have a twin sister and an older half brother. I am a college graduate and work in the medical field, and am completing a second degree in Nursing.
In 2010, my life started to change. My father passed away at the young age of 56. He and my mother were about to celebrate thier 30th wedding anniversary.
Devastated, I did not know where to turn. I graduated college that spring and I moved away, and moved in with room mates. In 2011 the house I was sharing with room mates burned to the ground. I lost most of my belongings. About that same time, I was laid off from my job. At this time I did not notice my health declining, only the feelings of depression and hopelessness from these events.
Moving home, I gained support from my mother and got a new job and tried to get back on my feet. During this year, I started to feel sick. I went to the doctor, but no answers were found. Month by month, I could feel my health declining. I kept visiting doctors with no new answers. I got sent to specialists who would push medications and would try to mis-diagnose me and send me on my way. My symptoms became so bad that I was throwing up every day, had no appetite, was weak and shaky, could not spend more than a few hours on my feet, dealt with fever at night, digestion issues, and problems breathing. One day I called in to work and promptly was admitted to the ER. Tests were ran for Lupus and Lukemia. I was sent home again with no answers. One day my primary care physician was looking at my blood work and noticed my Creatinine levels were elevated. She said, I think you need to see a Kidney specialist.
I was finally diagnosed with Chronic Kidney Disease, (with thin basement membrane and inter tubular nephritis). At the time of the diagnosis, my kidney function was around 20 percent. The prognosis was a kidney transplant would be needed.
The struggle was just beginning. I was determined to work full time until my health was so bad that I could not continue. My twin sister was a donor match for me and went through extensive testing at Stanford university. We were so frustrated to have the doctors deny the surgery after months of evaluation. My sister was deemed too risky a surgery at this point in her life.
Loving friends and family reached out to get tested for me, inclduing my mother, Gail. Stanford turned to her next to evaluate her as a possible donor for me.
At this point now, there is a 99 percent chance she will be accepted as my kidney donor.
My current health status is severe. I have 10 percent kidney function and I will be starting Peritonial dialysis until I can get the kidney transplant that I need.
Medical bills are piling up. My mother and I are trying to stay above water.
I know times are hard, but I wanted to tell my story and have a place where donations can be sent. I would appreciate even one dollar.
Thank you for taking the time to read this.
Sincerely, Veronica B.
