Our original story/plea is below but I wanted to reach out and thank each of you that has helped! We appreciate it more than you will ever know. This whole situation is unfortunate and so very stressful. Our little family does not know when we will have to leave our home (a home that I have lived in for 36 of my 46 years). We do not have, nor have we been able to come up with, a large chunk of money to offer to purchase the property back. If there is anyone out there that can help in any way, please? It is breaking our hearts thinking about leaving Baker Drive, leaving our property in the middle of all of our family land that has some random renter on it.
We have spent the last year trying to work on our credit but we are not in any position, yet, to get a loan. Our original goal was to get our credit in order and purchase a new modular/mobile home to put on the property to live out our remaining years. Nothing extravagant, just a nice little home in which we could retire and live for the remainder of our lives. We would like to have been able to leave this property to our daughter as my mother did to me.
If anyone knows of someone or somewhere that might help us, please reach out. We know it's it a lot of money but if anyone could lend us the money or co-sign a loan, we would be happy to sign a promissory note to pay every cent back in a timely manner! Most people that I know don't have an extra $20,000 - $25,000 laying around for someone to borrow but were trying to stay positive and have some hope.
The scary part of all this is the fact that we will probably be forced out in the fall or winter with no where to go. That terrifies us. We have looked for rentals since we found out about all of this but apartments are scarce, expensive, and everyone is looking. Never in our lives would we have ever thought that we would be homeless. It is terrifying.
So, I am sending this out one more time in hopes that some of you might take the time to read it and forward me some ideas of how to proceed.
Again, thank you to everyone who has reached out and helped us!!!!!!!!
Also, the sad part of this is, that the LLC that purchased the property also purchased another property at the same auction. It took me months to find out who had actually purchased the property. At first I was given an attorney's name in Florida. We wrote a letter to the attorney in Florida, when we found out, but never received a response. Then, they sent a private investigator to the property to speak with us. We gave him the same letter to send to the owner, but again, no response. The letter was an extremely emotional letter describing what this property means to us and an offer to purchase it back. A month or two later we received a lease in the mail. The LLC wanted to lease our property to us for almost $600/month. They also tried to offer us $1,000.00 to leave the property. Even the Sherriff that served us the paperwork to begin the eviction process believed that something was amiss with this whole situation. It's funny to us that the Sherriff is called upon to serve us eviction paperwork almost a year after the property was sold at an auction but the State of Maine does not require the Town to have foreclosure documentation served. There is something wrong with this!
Again, we thank each and every one of you. Please reach out if you have an ideas or can think of some way to resolve this!
Our family has been living in our home for 13 1/2 years but it is also where I was raised. Due to our property taxes being 18 months late the Town sold our property at an auction without properly notifying us. All of this for $364.00. This is legal in the State of Maine. Because we were not aware of the sale there was nothing that we could do to stop it. I do take complete responsibility for the taxes being late. As there is no mortgage on the property it is something that was overlooked and the Town has allowed us to pay a few years at a time in the past. Eight months after the auction we received a tax bill for our property that stated we owed $0.00. At that time, the Town Office was shut down due to COVID. When the Town Office opened back up, I called to find out why our tax bill showed a zero balance. I was told that the Town sold our property at auction, 8 months prior. The Town did not notify us after the sale either. When I asked who purchased it, I was given the name of an attorney in Florida and tried to reach out to him but did not hear anything back until we were served eviction paperwork last fall. The property was purchased by a woman from North Carolina/Florida under an LLC. She has no plans to live on the property; just to rent it out. Honestly, I don’t even know how she was able to find the property because the Town listed the auction notice in the first part of the local paper in the “world” section; not in the classifieds section where I was told by the Town that it was listed.
We tried to get assistance from a local organization for free legal services and were approved but the attorney backed out. We are now trying to pay for an attorney that has found an issue with the Town process and the purchaser is fighting us every step of the way. They keep filing different lawsuits because they are angry that the judge gave us a stay to their writ of eviction and they have even tried to get the case moved to Superior Court. We have spent all our savings on attorney's fees and to continue to fight it will cost us much, much more. We can continue to fight and may or may not win the case, but legal fees will be over $20,000. Our attorney suggested that the only way to get our property back is to offer the LLC, more than what they paid. Now we are living day to day not knowing if we will be homeless in the very near future with nowhere to go as there aren’t any affordable rentals at this time and barely any two-bedroom rentals at all. We would also to give up our pets which would break our hearts The property that we live on has been in my family for 80 years and the road that we live on is named after my grandfather. Family lives on all sides. It was left to me when my mother passed away. The memories we have here are priceless; yet now there is a price on those too.
We both work full time and do the best we can but there is no way that we can get a loan at this time. We have been working on our credit and our hopes were to put a new home on this property and be able to pass it on to our daughter.
2020 was a horrible year for everyone. During the pandemic our daughter was diagnosed with Cyclic Vomiting disorder and she has been in an out of the the hospital six times in the past year. We are overwhelmed mentally and financially.
If you can help us in any way, we would greatly appreciate it. We never thought we would have to ask for this kind of help but are desperately trying to hold onto all that we owned in this world. The thought of possibly being homeless and losing our family property is devastating to all of us and we are not sure what to do. We have tried to reach out to every agency or organization that we could think of to help us with this but have been unable to find assistance.
Thank you.
