Maria Mims is a mother, wife, friend, mentor, and registered nurse that has been diagnosed with Stage 4 Large Cell Lung Cancer. She lives in Sumter, SC and is married to John Mims. She has 4 children and 5 grandchildren with 1 more grandchild on the way! She is a nurse at McLeod Regional Medical Center, currently in the ER, but has also worked in CVICU. She also has done travel nurse contracts at MUSC and Scotland Memorial Hospital.
In August of 2015, Maria began having chest pain and cough that was becoming a nuisance. An initial CT scan showed us that something was very wrong. After a few more tests, the diagnosis of lung cancer was confirmed. Never a smoker, this diagnosis was quite a shock. She immediately was started on chemotherapy and has had multiple surgeries/procedures to ensure her comfort and quality of life, and will continue to have to do so. She has recently struggled with other medical problems caused by the cancer such as pleural effusions (fluid building up in the lung) and blood clots in the lung and legs. Through this she has had multiple hospitalizations. She is an amazing woman who is giving her all to fight this disease. So much so, that she has continued to try and work throughout her chemotherapy and multiple surgeries/procedures. Through the most recent diagnosis, Maria has had to stop working and will probably continue to have to do so in order to take care of her own health. She is a caregiver at heart, and wants to provide care to others, not be the one that has to have care provided to her.
Maria is so incredibly loved by everyone who has had the pleasure of knowing her. Patients truly love and appreciate the compassion that she shows them. She has a true passion for mentoring new nurses as well, and it shows through her every action. To receive care from Maria means that you will probably get a hug or two, and no matter what mood you are in, she will brighten your day through her bright personality and humor. She is highly respected and adored to so many who have been a part of her career at McLeod. Her compassion for others is immeasurable. She is an inspiration to all of her family and friends. She is choosing to fight with endless positivity and has put her trust in God to hold her up throughout this journey.
To try to put into words what an impact Maria has on any and everyone that comes in contact with her is impossible. It has taken months to convince her to allow her friends and family to contribute to her medical expenses. She is insistent that there are others who need help more than she does. She is humble to no end. The expenses incurred during this lung cancer journey are incredible. If you find it in your heart to donate to Maria Mim’s medical expenses, any and all donations will be greatly appreciated. Together we are all fighting with Maria, because no one fights cancer alone!! #MariaStrong
Maria’s favorite verse and motto during her battle:
Isaiah 41:10 “Do not fear for I am with you, do not be dismayed for I am your God. I will strengthen you and I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
God Bless!!
