In May of 2012 Tony underwent emergency brain surgery to remove a large tumor from his head. Luckily the tumor was benign, but the recovery was long and difficult. In time, Tony was able to get back on his feet, found meaningful work, and met Jess shortly thereafter. But just when we thought things were getting back to normal for Tony, he was dealt some very scary health news this February.
Doctors diagnosed Tony with Intramucosal Esophageal Carcinoma"“ a dangerous throat cancer that formed after years of an undiagnosed and untreated condition called Barrett's Esophagus (which is severe acid reflux).
Hearing the news that your brother has cancer is truly difficult.
I've always been able to help my little brother out, no matter the situation. And trust me, there have been plenty ☺ But this time, it's different. This time he needs the prayers and support of our entire family, our friends and our community.
Tony is scheduled for esophageal surgery on Monday, April 7th. The procedure is called an Esophagectomy, and it's not easy. The amazing doctors at Brigham and Women's will not only be removing his entire esophagus, they will also be reconstructing it by stretching his stomach up and reattaching it near the throat to form a new esophagus. Incredible, I know. We are so lucky to live in the times we do, where surgeons are skilled enough to successfully perform such miracles.
This surgery and the lengthy recovery to follow will be Tony's toughest challenge yet. His entire lifestyle will have to change. But he is positive and is ready to meet this challenge head-on. Though he's already missed a month of work, and will undoubtedly miss a lot more after the surgery, the last thing Tony needs is to worry about money while he's recovering. So, we've launched this fundraising campaign to hopefully lessen Tony's financial obligations while he's out of work and allow him to focus on getting better! We've set a goal of $5,000 to help pay his medical bills that are not covered by insurance as well as everyday living expenses like rent, utilities and food. With little savings, and no disability to fall back on, Tony can really use the help.
If you're able to contribute, any donation is greatly appreciated. Even if you cannot contribute, your thoughts and prayers are every bit as important to us. Together we are hoping to achieve this fundraising goal and God willing, we'll have Tony back on his feet and getting fitted for his wedding tuxedo in no time. ☺
Thank you all so much for reading this and for supporting my brother. Your love and friendship mean more than you can possibly imagine.
**Please note, in addition to this online fundraiser we will also be holding an in-person event at the Clinton Elks Lodge on Friday, May 23rd from 6:00 pm-12:00 am. More details to follow. Please join us if you can make it!
