8 to CREATE is a non-profit and registered student organization at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Normally, 8 to CREATE is an art event in which 8 artists have 8 hours to create 8 artworks. The event is open to the public to observe, engage, and participate in the creative process. The primary goal of 8 to CREATE is to provide an opportunity for students to gain professional art and design experience and to engage in the Champaign-Urbana community.
Students are involved in all aspects of planning the event in order to gain practical experience. Members contribute their creative skills into real-life applications as well as learn from each other. Members also have the opportunity to network with professionals and organizations in the Champaign-Urbana community.
8 to CREATE has two secondary goals:
1) to make the typically private process of creating artwork accessible and open to the public for observation, engagement, and participation; and
2) to break down institutional and social hierarchies by bringing together a mix of artists from a variety of experiences and affiliations in one creative space.
Keeping aligned with our values and mission of involving the students and community in art, we plan to continue to host our show amidst the pandemic. After much planning and considering the safety of others, our show will be virtual this year.
