In the blink of an eye, my dear friend Akima and her family lost their home to a devastating house fire. She lives with her son, daughter, and toddler Grandson. In just two weeks her daughter is expected to welcome a new baby into the world. What should be a joyful and exciting time has instead become overwhelming and uncertain.

Due to heavy smoke damage, nearly everything in the home was destroyed or cannot be salvaged—including all of the baby’s furniture and essential items. Cribs, bassinets, clothing, and supplies that were carefully prepared are now gone. On top of this, the family is currently without a permanent place to live.

The Red Cross was able to provide $320 per person, which is only covering a hotel for a few days. With the holidays approaching and a newborn arriving soon, the family is facing enormous financial and emotional stress as they try to secure housing and replace basic necessities.

• Replace baby furniture and newborn essentials

• Replace clothing and basic household items

• Begin rebuilding after this unexpected loss
