Welcome to Shravya's GoFundMe page. My name is Cecile Pendleton. I live in Washington State and I am asking for your financial support for my friend Shravya to pay for her Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering.
I will explain how Shravya and I are connected and why she needs help to get her degree. Way back in 1990 when I was just out of university I travelled to India. I spent six months volunteering at St. Theresa’s School in the village of Sarapaka, Andhra Pradesh. Shravya’s mother Rajani was a young teacher at St. Theresa’s School. We became friends and I am forever grateful to Rajani for helping me to understand my surroundings and find my place in their community. Over the years Rajani married another schoolteacher and they have two daughters. I last saw Rajani and met her husband in 2002 for a very brief visit when my husband and I were in India. Rajani and her husband both still teach at St. Theresa’s School.
Over the past two years I have had the pleasure of getting to know Shravya, my friend Rajani’s eldest daughter, through email, Facebook and phone calls. She is now in her twenties and has completed her bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering at Aurora Engineering College in Hyderabad, India. Her goal is to complete a Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering at Cleveland State University in Ohio, USA. She has done all the academic work necessary and has been accepted into Cleveland State’s Engineering Masters Degree program. She has passed all the entrance exams and received her visa to study in the US.
Shravya’s parents had planned to use their life savings to send her to study in the US. Then, like something out of a Dickens novel, things changed. Her dad fell prey to an unscrupulous investment scheme. They lost everything. For a while Rajani’s brother was helping the family out financially, but then he died suddenly, leaving two children. Shravya’s Dad’s twin brother also helped the family, but then he also died. Shravya’s parents have managed to take out bank loans so that she can still come to the US to get her masters degree as planned, but it is a huge financial burden. The loans only cover her first year at Cleveland State.
Shravya’s parents, sister and cousins are now counting on her to finish her degree and take care of the family. Through all the financial worries of her parents, Shravya has stayed determined to get her masters degree so she can get a good job and help them. She starts at Cleveland State in August 2015. Please give generously to Shravya’s fund. I hope you will help this admirable and determined young woman finish her degree and help her family get back on their feet.
