Dream of Being a Teacher

Teachers have the incredible opportunity to profoundly change the lives of children in need. As a child from a troubled upbringing, with a mother with substance abuse problems, uncertainty in having just the basics, and a stint in foster care, I know firsthand how caring teachers can positively shape a future.

For the past ten years, I have been working either full or part-time, attending Evergreen City College and then transfering to California State University Monterey Bay (CSUMB), and being a single mom to the most wonderful thing that ever happened to me - 9-year-old Nathan. In May, I will have earned my BA in pyschology from CSUMB.  Even though I am proud to be the first one in my entire family to have a college degree and I consider myself a strong educational role model for my son, I find myself facing over $50,000 in student loans. This is a major roadblock in my quest to complete my education and become a credentialed elementary school teacher.

I have hit my limit in student loans and financial aid. To continue to the credential program at CSUMB and reach my dream of becoming a teacher, I need to find funding on my own. The credential program does not allow time for outside work as you are student teaching during the day and attending classes in the afternoons and evenings. Weekends will be for projects, homework, and time with Nate. 

This is why I am reaching out via GoFundMe. I am hoping that people can think about a teacher who may have changed their life for the better, and in their honor, help me become a caring, compassionate, effective, positive role model for many, many children. Every penny will help.
