Ethan's Recovery

On January 5th, my 16 year old son, Ethan,  was involved in a two passenger, single car accident that resulted in the death of his dear friend.

By nothing short of a miracle, Ethan survived but has sustained
1) numerous broken bones: 4 ribs, the manubrium, sternum, clavicle, scapula and several vertabrae
2) severe internal injuries: splenectomy, laceratered and/or contused kidney, liver, bladder, bowels, stomach & a punctured lung. Both of the lungs are severely contused & still holding a decent amount of fluid/blood.
3) the most impactful & primary reason for this fundraiser is the paralysis from the belly button below- known as a T10 SCI.

Ethan has undergone 2 operations- one was performed the first day to stop the internal bleeding and explore the extent of internal damage. The second surgery was longer and much more invasive T7 to L4 spinal fusion.

With some unexpected speed bumps and hiccups along the way, we were excited & blessed to learn that we were accepted to SHEPHERD MEDICAL CENTER in Atlanta for rehabilitation!! One of the best in the U.S.!!

We are a long way from where we began and still have quite the road to travel but Ethan is a fighter! He wants nothing more than to return to a newly modified & healthy life.  This journey to regaining independence as a parapalegic will take months of ground work along with some major life adjustments & environmental modifications.

We will and already have begun to incur some medical expenses not covered by insurance. Our immediate needs consist of medical transport to and from the Shepherd Center, stocking & setting up durable & disposable medical equipment & wheel chair accessibility at home. Some of the unforeseen (partial and/or not covered) costs will be co-pays, deductibles, some outpatient, respiratory & mental health care.  Since this will be long term or perhaps life long care.

Our most recent status as of 1/22/2021 is that Ethan was successfully transported and we checked into the Shepherd Center today. ASIA test will be Saturday to define and describe the extent and severity of the spinal cord injury. We have already seen an abundance of doctors and staff that have been more than welcoming. Next week will be an hour long conference scheduled with the Dr to discuss the spine injury more and  get a 3D mold. Construction for home modifications should start next week to make home handicap accessible for Ethan when he returns. At this point we are taking things one day at a time and appreciate all of the support, prayers, and kindness everyone has extended. Please keep in mind that no donation is too small. Every little bit helps even if all you have is continued prayers and good vibes to send our way during recovery.
