On December 24th, 2022 (Christmas Eve) my 10 year old nephew Julian was admitted into a hospital in New York to have an appendectomy

and has been there ever since. Not only did his appendix rupture but now he is in the beginning of Acute Renal Failure (ARF). The cause for the ARF is The appendicitis and medication used for pain. Those two in conjunction are hard on the kidneys. Julian has had ultrasounds, and MRIs and it shows “free fluids” in and around kidneys. The free fluids was caused by the appendectomy they found It was in his abdomen. Bloodwork shows increased creatinine levels. He was urinating blood. On 12/31/2022 They administer Albumin, this is a naturally occurring thing that the liver creates and since he’s not eating and is swollen his albumin is not present. Albumin in blood vessels acts as sponge for fluid and because the albumin is so low his body/skin is retaining water.

2. And then Lasix for diuretic to jump start his kidneys.

Unfortunately, this treatment did not work. JJ’s creatinine level increased more.

This morning, January 1, 2023, the doctors decided it was best to start dialysis. A catheter was inserted in his leg, and for the next 24 hours he will have continuous renal replacement therapy. It will take about 2-3 days to see if the dialysis worked. The doctors will monitor to see if his kidneys will wake up. His kidney function is low to zero. He is unable to create urine.

Julian’s mom, Amber, hasn’t left his side. Leaving family members to care for Julian’s twin brother and two younger brothers. Even though Amber has health insurance for JJ, they are out of state. It is uncertain how much she will have to cover. Amber will be out of work for the unforeseen future. With that being said, bills don’t stop coming in just because of a family medical emergency. Through your kindness today, Amber will have one less worry and she will be forever grateful.

For those that don’t know Julian, he is such an amazing young boy, he’s funny, his laugh is contagious. His smile brightens the darkest room. He loves video games. He is the first one to help his younger brothers. His twin brother misses him more than anyone else. Julian just wants to come home to see his entire family and finally open all his Christmas gifts.
