Dr. Solomon Gebreyeous practiced dentistry for six years after graduation from Baylor College of Dentistry, rarely missing a day or taking any vacations. He was in a very unfortunate sky diving accident on September 7th 2019, which left him paralyzed from the neck down. Solomon went straight into surgery that night, where the surgeon attempted to spread and stabilize the vertebrae in order to alleviate the spinal compression that took place during the accident. He has worked very hard over the last 14 months with his physical therapy team and has been able to gain some movement of his hands and arms, but has not been able to gain enough dexterity to allow him to move under his own control. He has encountered many obstacles this last year, including the global COVID crisis, which halted his therapy program for many months.
His newest obstacle is that his progress has reached a plateau and that his health insurance will no longer cover his physical therapy. The surgeon told him that whatever progress is achieved within 18 months will likely be the full extent of his recovery. He has spent most of his savings over these last 14 months on surgeries and other therapies. Solomon is now paying for physical therapy out of his pocket, transportation service with a lift for his wheelchair, a nurse to take care of him, health insurance premiums/ health related expenses, and many more things in his daily life. While he does have some money coming in from his disability policy, it does not cover near enough.
Initially we did not say anything publicly out of respect for his privacy and trust, but after a recent talk to him, it has become increasingly obvious that this hardship is weighing heavily on him. All donations will go directly to Solomon for his path to recovery and any little bit will go a long way.
