Sharon's Medical Expenses

Donation protected
Sharon suffered a major stroke in June 2022. Ironically she was preparing to get gas in preparation to travel to an imaging center the next day for a diagnostic MRI. When she experienced the stroke she fell out of her car at the gas station breaking her right ankle and left hip. Within 24 hours of being admitted to the hospital she underwent surgery on her ankle and hip. Her bones began to heal and some of the impairments from the stroke began to slowly resolve. But she started to experience complications: anemia requiring four transfusions, several UTIs, and a second outpatient hip surgery. Her ability to participate in rehabilitation was limited by a non-weight bearing boot for 12 weeks. limiting her full participation in rehab. The stroke affected her dominant right side and though her arm has regained some of its function and strength the right leg has made little improvement.

This drastic change in her health requires equally drastic changes to her living situation. Sharon and her family have had to adjust to many living environments since the stroke. She has been in St. David's hospital twice and in two different Rehab institutions. In August when her insurance declined to authorize any further inpatient rehab she was obliged to go to an Assisted Living facility. After three months she returned home under the care of her sisters. When her sisters had to return home she received home health services for several weeks before going to a second Assisted Living facility where she resides today. Although she has been receiving outpatient therapy since August the insurance has limited the frequency of the sessions which is frustrating for her and her physicians. Despite the constraints of the wheelchair, and the residual effects of the stroke Sharon has worked diligently to regain strength and mobility.

While necessary Assisted Living and home health aides ($ 5000-$5500 per month) are not covered by insurance. Other out-of-pocket expenses include durable medical equipment, incontinent supplies, etc. Sharon uses a motorized wheelchair requiring specialized transportation for medical appointments. This was another out-of-pocket expense for four and half months ($75-$200 per trip) before going to Watermark Assisted Living. She maintains her apartment which is another budget item.

Sharon’s family and friends want to ease the immense financial burden this stroke has created. Sharon is an active member of the Westlake Presbyterian Church community. Prior to her stroke she was the definition of independence; driving, providing childcare, working on Sundays at her Church, and participating in community events. Her faith, and her love for family, friends, children and animals know no bounds. She has been supportive to many of us over the years; providing guidance, support, love, and help however she could. An animal lover, avid book reader, and baby whisperer she approaches everything in life with grace, including this challenging time. Her road to recovery will be long and her prognosis is uncertain. Recently she was referred by her neurologist to a rehabilitation physician. She remains dedicated to her Recovery and is hopeful for different modalities. Sharon is grateful for the support from her family and friends.

All proceeds from this fundraiser will go directly to Sharon to cover costs incurred since June and towards future care and medical expenses.
