7th Grade WOIS Camp Cory

"One reason to take this trip every year is because at our age, all we do has to do with with technology and we can barely go outside because of our neighborhoods. But with this camp, we got to experience the outdoors.”
That’s what one of our World of Inquiry 8th graders said when reflecting on his Outward Bound experience at Camp Cory. When surveyed about their favorite middle school memory, over 90% said it was Outward Bound, Camp Cory. In a couple of weeks, we will take 100 of our 7th graders to an overnight camp. Many of our students have never been outside of our city. Most of our students are living below the poverty line. Many do not know how to swim. There is no easy "fix" to public education. But we do know that kids need to know that they matter, and they matter enough to give them experiences beyond classroom walls, beyond their neighborhoods, beyond the daily stresses so many of our children face. For a $40.00 donation, You will be giving a kid a chance to sleep in a cabin, skip rocks, go zip-lining, try out archery, paddle a kayak, act out silly skits at a campfire, jump in the lake at 7a.m., make s'mores, collect rocks and leaves, see Orions Belt, get outside their comfort zone, eat as much as they want, and laugh. We want every single child to go, and we take every single kid. I can't stop the violence in Rochester, NY, But I can take 100 12-13 year olds into the wild. I can give middle schoolers a joyous experience that they will carry with them as they grow and move forward through life. I know it's worth it, I hope you will too. We are going in the first week of October, and we are so close to meeting our goal. Thank you for showing our students that they matter and that we are all in this together! We are so grateful for your generosity!
