7th Grade Survival Field Trip!

Donation protected
7th grade at Edward Brooke Charter School in Mattapan, MA is in the middle of a cross-curricular survival unit. As a capstone field trip, we are fundraising to bring students to New England Base Camp in the Blue Hills where they will get the opportunity to learn and practice survival skills they have studied in this unit! Students will build weatherproof shelters, learn to start fires using flint and steel, and how to turn snow into drinkable water!

In ELA, students have read Hatchet by Gary Paulsen, To Build a Fire by Jack London, excerpts from Julie of the Wolves by Jean Craighead George and are about to begin Lord of the Fies by William Golding. They have studied motifs specific to the survival fiction genre, analyzed the use of literary devices, and studied Maslow's hierarchy of needs.

In science and math, students are creating scale models of shelters designed for specific and unique survival scenarios. The designing and building of the structures satisfy structure standards for 7th-grade science and scale standards for 7th-grade math. Further, students will need to design a communication system to communicate between shelters which satisfies the 7th-grade science communication standards.

In computer science, students are programming a rover to "locate and retrieve" survivors and materials.
