My name is Yasha Riley and just 24 hours after celebrating my 34th birthday in January 2020, my 1-year-old son and I, along with a friend, were involved in a horrible car accident.

Fortunately, my son, Yuri only sustained minor injuries and has since recovered and my friend, who sustained an injured knee, is also recovering well. However, the force of the impact resulted in severe damage to the C4-C5 vertebras of my spinal cord. It took law enforcement around 12 minutes to cut me from the vehicle. During this time my only concern was my son; even though I was unable to feel my legs. After being cut from the car, I was transported to Broward General’s trauma unit. I was in surgery for three hours and stayed in ICU for a few days. I have since been released from the hospital and currently enrolled in an intense rehabilitation programme.

My doctors are optimistic, that I will be fully able to walk again, and I believe that by the grace of God that I will. The length of the rehab process is unknown at this point; but I am looking forward to regaining full mobility. I know I will soon be able to take my son to the park, swimming lessons and play dates.
