Mason Millet is your typical teenager. A high school senior with exceptional grades, upright bass player in the high school orchestra, track and field athlete, Boy Scout youth closing in on Eagle Scout, a friend, a sibling and a son. What’s not typical about Mason is that he’s no longer able to do any of these activities.
What began in 2021 as a simple illness, a fever with some joint and muscle pain, a cough and fatigue that wouldn’t go away, and experiencing long-lasting, debilitating headaches due to the symptoms, has now been formally diagnosed as long COVID. And it has turned his life, and the lives of his family and friends, completely upside down.
His body aches in ways he and we never knew possible, his mind is clouded by a relentless fog that makes even the simplest tasks feel impossible. His brain feels like it is encased in a thick, unrelenting haze. Focus is a battle. Words slip through his fingers, and memory became an elusive concept. It is like watching his own life from a distance, as if he is a stranger to his own story. School, which had once been his domain that he really enjoyed, became a distant memory. He can no longer join and chat with his classmates in the hallways, attend music lessons, or experience the milestones that seniors should enjoy. Sports, Scouts and the passion of playing music, have become a painful reminder of what he has lost.
After countless doctor appointments in NE Ohio, with consultations from doctors across the country, the family struggles with a medical profession that knows little about the treatment and, if possible, a cure for folks suffering with long COVID. And don’t even get us started on the insurance industry.
But, there may be hope available. The family has discovered, and been approved for, a program that has been showing promising results. The outpatient program is a 3-5 month program, with 4 treatment days per week, in Cambridge, MA which will require temporary living arrangements in Massachusetts while attending this program. His program will begin on January 14, 2025, so time is of the essence.
This GoFundMe campaign has been created to assist the Millet family in offsetting the costs of the program as well as the temporary housing needed while going through this program. The family sees this as a chance to help Mason get back to a normal, healthy teenage lifestyle and possibly be a trailblazer for others suffering from long COVID.
Please consider helping our friends make this happen by donating to reduce the out-of-pocket costs that insurance refuses to cover and the very high cost of short term hosing in Cambridge area. Mason's treatment begins on January 15, 2025, so we're hoping to get a quick start on helping this awesome family.
