Welcome to our fundraiser for a new scholarship fund for LGBTQ students and their allies in the Homewood-Flossmoor area! We sincerely hope you will consider supporting our efforts by making a donation and sharing this campaign.
Scholarship Description:
Lighthouse LGBTQ is launching the first LGBTQ-specific scholarship fund in the south suburbs of Chicago for students in the Homewood-Flossmoor area. The Lighthouse Scholarship will be awarded to students graduating from Homewood-Flossmoor High School with plans to attend a two or four-year college after graduation. This will be the only scholarship in the area that is specifically dedicated to LGBTQ graduates and their allies.
We know that supporting, encouraging, and recognizing LGBTQ students (+allies) with their own scholarship is so important to promote inclusivity and help students achieve their full potential. Students from the HF area are proven leaders, and we hope that this annual scholarship can provide some additional financial support to LGBTQ students and allies that are dedicated to increasing LGBTQ visibility and improving the lives of those in their community.
A Bit About Us:
Lighthouse LGBTQ is a community organization dedicated to supporting teens and young adults struggling with their sexual and gender identity in the south suburbs of Chicago. Since our inception over five (5) years ago, Lighthouse has held countless meetings with LGBTQ youth, hosted various speakers from the Chicago area, and has increased LGBTQ visibility and acceptance in the south suburbs through annual community-based pride efforts.
Stephanie Wright is an active member of the HF community with two children who are HF graduates, Valerie Litchfield is a Flossmoor resident of 30+ years with three children who are HF graduates, and James Austin is an incoming law student and 2012 graduate of HF. We are all passionate about developing an inclusive community for LGBTQ youth. The Homewood-Flossmoor area has been such a wonderful and welcoming place to develop our organization, and we’re so excited to continue the momentum by setting a scholarship fund that will exist to support LGBTQ teens in our community for years to come.
Scholarship Management:
This scholarship will be managed by the HFHS Foundation, which currently manages over ten (10) scholarships for students graduating from Homewood-Flossmoor High School. The award will then be administered by the Homewood-Flossmoor High School guidance department at the annual Honors Convocation ceremony. The HFHS Foundation will maintain the funds and the scholarship will be paid directly to the student recipient.
Use of Funds:
All donations to this page will be used for the Lighthouse Scholarship fund, which will benefit LGBTQ students and their allies. The intent of this fund is to provide scholarship awards of $1,000 for students graduating from Homewood-Flossmoor High School. The number of awards and the amount of each award may be adjusted based on the final amount of all donations received.
