Help Send Makeda to Joffrey Ballet
Donation protected
Dear Friends and Family,
My name is Makeda Roney. As many of you know, I am a young dancer and ballet enthusiast. I have been a dancer since I took my first breath of air and I have been training in dance since the age of 8. I love the art of moving because it allows me to be fully expressive, letting go and speaking with my body. I could not imagine my life without dance in it.
Born and raised in a family of artists, I grew up nurtured by the power of art and creativity .... With so few female ballerinas of color recognized, I am inspired to contribute to breaking cultural barriers in ballet which have kept dancers of color underappreciated. By refining my skills as a dancer, I envision being a powerful role model and great a product of my community.
This summer, I have been given the opportunity to train at the Joffrey Ballet School in Chicago with the possibility to stay as a professional Trainee. Studying at Joffrey Academy will prepare me for pursuing my career as a professional dancer. Through the Joffrey program, I will cultivate my diverse set of skills including my technique, artistry, creativity, power and intelligence.
As much as I really would like to go, I would not be able to if I cannot pay for the expenses of the tuition, travel, pointe shoes and living expenses. I will leave for Chicago the week of June 15, 2014. My goal is to raise $4,000 with which to pay summer intensive tuition, plus the addition of travel and pointe shoes for the 5 week program. All donations are appreciated and welcomed!
