Freedom Ride NYC to DC

My name is Erik Kantar. I’ve been involved in protests against police brutality these last couple weeks in NYC but have been thinking of more ways to contribute. Like most fresh grads, I’m unable to donate a sizable amount to local black organizations fighting the good fight — so here I am.

On July 1st, I will begin riding my bicycle from New York City to arrive in Washington D.C. on the Fourth of July to protest on Capitol Hill.

I’ll be passing through New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Maryland with a large Black Lives Matter flag strapped to the back of my bicycle to spread the word on the 225 mile ride. If you’d like to join the ride, please reach out to me via social media or through email [email redacted]

All proceeds raised will be split in five ways and donated to the following five NYC based organizations that are doing great work to support their community:

The Action Bail Fund

The Action Bail Fund supports legal cost associated w/ protest in NYC. We recognize that the US has weaponized the legal system to shut down dissent. We're here to support whoever needs it. No one should get stuck in jail bc they took to the street and shared their voice.

Black Feminist Project

The Black Feminist Project enriches the lives of, restores agency, justice, joy and health to Black women, girls and non-men, often referred to as marginalized genders or MaGes and the children they care for - with an emphasis on mother-led families.
Using dynamic and engaging food and reproductive justice programming that explores not only the intersections of race, class, gender and respectability politics but also empowers them to tap into their inherent leadership abilities and dare to put themselves at the center of their own universes.

Black Journalist Therapy Relief Fund

A fund to support black journalists’ mental health. Money raised will provide resources for black reporters who are covering racial injustices and need support in processing “trauma incurred both on the job and in daily life,” according to the fundraiser.

New York Emergency Relief Fund

The emergency relief fund pays bail for incarcerated LGTBQ and medically vulnerable New Yorkers who are on Rikers Island or detained by U.S. Immigration Customs Enforcement. The fund has paid bail for 160 people in New York and paid over $900,000 in bail funds since the COVID-19 pandemic hit NYC.

The Legal Aid Society

The Legal Aid Society provides legal services and works to ensure “justice for all New Yorkers.” Whether it’s defending the incarcerated and fighting for racial equity or working to reform policy, the Legal Aid Society pledges to support every day and low-income residents across the five boroughs. The organization has also released helpful guidelines on the rights of those currently protesting police brutality.
