Abigail's Journey

Donation protected
Abigail Bella Metilus was born December 5th, 2017 and has been a shining light to her parents Ken and Tamara.

When she was just five months old, he parents noticed she was vomiting frequently and not gaining weight.  After multiple hospitalizations at Sanford in Bismarck, doctors were unable to find a problem and she was transferred to Sanford Fargo, where again they were given no diagnosis.  Abigail continued to have delayed growth and her parents had to feed her through a nasogastric tube.  They thought she would grow out of it.

Unfortunately, things just got worse.  At the beginning of this year Abigail started to lose some developmental milestones she once had. She couldn’t walk.  She stopped sitting up. Hardest for Ken was when she stopped saying “Dada”. This led to multiple trips to Minnesota to two separate hospitals with hopes to find answers to help little Abigail.  Again they were sent home with no answers, but genetic testing was sent out all over the country.

This week, their local pediatrician spoke the words no parent wants to hear: “Abigail’s condition will kill her”.  She has received a diagnosis of progressive leukodystrophy/neurodegenerative disorder.  This has caused the progressive loss of milestones.  It means that her brain, spinal cord and nerves are all involved and effects all her talking, eating, movement, eyesight….really everything.

No one was ready to give up on Abigail, who is now approaching her 2nd birthday.  Her doctors, along with Ken and Tamara, will continue to fight for Abigail.  The family is currently making another trip to Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN to participate in some trial therapies and medications.  Although Abigail has insurance, her condition has required helicopter transport at times, which is not covered, and her parents are experiencing financial stress with so much time off work, travel and unforeseen expenses.  Ken works full time at Ross clothing store and Tamara works at Bobcat.  Now is the time for them to hold Abigail in their arms and have this financial burden lifted from them.

Ken has been very active in the soccer community in Bismarck and also created a non-profit to help his home country of Haiti. The family attends Evangel church in Bismarck where they have been active in Bible study groups.

The soccer community is a large family throughout the world. Today we ask the soccer family and the Bismarck community to help fight for Abigail.  Wrap our arms around this family in financial help, support and prayers.
