A Breath of Fresh AIR

What my Dad means to me cannot be expressed with words. Let’s take a short time-hop if you will. Those of you that are close to me know that Fast Fred Cole is not my biological father. When I was young, I was lost without a father figure, waiting so many days by the front door when my “real” Dad said he would come to see me; memories I am not fond of. Thankfully, when I was 4, this long-haired man with a Hulk Hogan beard (my association) rolled up on my grandmother’s lawn on the baddest motorcycle I’ve ever seen. Mom had already told me so much about him, so I ran out of the front door and introduced myself. I asked him if he would take me for a ride (which he happily obliged) and scooped me up. As I set on the tank gripping the handlebars racing down the streets at a snail’s pace screaming with joy, I knew I had found a best friend.

I once wrote a paper in elementary school naming Fred the superhero in my life, not Superman or Batman; you see, this is the effect he had on me. I was so nervous to call him “Dad” but that day came when I walked into our living room and just said it! The expression on his face was priceless and an ingrained image I will never forget. He EARNED that title, the respect, and the honour to be called Dad that so many others take for granted. When I was 12, we went to the courthouse and finalized things; I was now a “Cole.” From the day we met, he raised me as his own Son and I am certain, I would not be where I am today without his persistence, guidance, love, and support. He made me the man I am today!

Over the years my Dad has organized numerous fund raisers for family and friends alike, garnering tens of thousands of dollars and pouring in his own time and money to lend a helping hand without ever asking for dime in return. He did it all out of the kindness of his heart and truly lives up to his mark in my life and so many others as a superhero!

Now my Dad needs my help, he needs all of our help. I have lost too many loved ones in my 35 years on this Earth. I am not ready to lose my Dad. About a year ago he was injected with Gadolinium (metal), typically used to enhance MRI images (https://gadoliniumtoxicity.com/help/symptoms/). This metal contrast solution is attacking his organs, specifically wreaking havoc on his lungs and a laundry list of various chronic and painful symptoms associated with it. To put this in perspective, he had no adverse health complications 8 months ago; today my Dad is dedicated to an oxygen tank with multiple breathing treatments daily. His symptoms are only worsening. Plainly put in the terms my Sister Harvest (RN) used, Gadolinium is turning his lungs to stone. He can no longer work, has sold all his tools used to make a living in order to keep his finances above the red line, and simply to make ends-meat at this point.

Thankfully, all is not lost! While there are no formal treatments like there are for Cancer, the Stem Cell of America (https://www.facebook.com/stemcellofamerica/?hc_location=ufi) has a proposed solution with an astonishing 95% success rate if caught early enough. This is a no-brainer right!? Well, it sure is but as with most research-based medical procedures, insurance coverage is a lost cause. Dad is scheduled for his first procedure on 18 August 2018. The procedure is $18,000, not including airfare, hotel, and food for a 3-day stay. This price tag covers the second procedure as well (less airfare, etc.) within the next 6 months or so, but let’s just take it one step at a time.

Of course there no guarantees of success but there never is in life. I just want to give him the opportunity to break out a harmonica to play another song, take 1 more motorcycle ride, and live to embrace his grandchildren and see them grow into successful adults. Thank you all in advance for your love and support as we move through this trying time together as a family!
