Together for Margaretta - Bone Marrow Transplant

We are fundraising on behalf of our cousin, Margaretta Gilhooley. #togetherformargaretta

Margaretta was diagnosed with Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia 7 years ago. She has endured 6 different chemotherapy treatments and has recently been deemed chemotherapy-resistant. This means the chemotherapy treatments are no longer working.

Margaretta will receive a bone marrow transplant this upcoming Monday at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital in New York City. The recovery from the bone marrow transplant is 12 months, with a hospital stay of 90 days post-op. Margaretta will be spending the next three months in New York City with the hope of returning home to her family by January. Margaretta’s supportive husband, Jim and their teenage twin daughters, Megan and Catherine, will eagerly await her return home to Dunmore, Pa.

Margaretta has been a patient at Sloan Kettering for many years. She has been regularly commuting back and forth from Dunmore to the New York City hospital and the Basking Ridge, New Jersey locations. While Margaretta is recovering, Jim will take a leave from work to care for both her and their daughters. We are hoping to raise money to help Margaretta and Jim with the medical bills and the travel expenses that they have been accruing over the last several years and will continue to accrue for the next couple of months.

Anyone who knows Margaretta knows she is a fighter. As the oldest cousin in a large family, she has always been the leader. She played a part in the upbringing of each and every cousin. She was first and foremost, our friend but also our babysitter, role model, and token sister. Even as a kid, she was always welcome at the adults' or kids' table as she bridged the gap between parents and kids. She is a caretaker. Margaretta has always been the one to lead the charge when it comes to helping grandparents, parents, aunts/uncles, siblings, cousins, nieces/nephews, friends, neighbors, and members of her community.

Margaretta is a fierce supporter and fundraiser for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and a leader for the Girl Scouts. Margaretta has had extraordinary love and support from her community, neighbors, friends, and family throughout her journey. We are all hoping that this #gofundme will alleviate some financial burdens and allow the Gilhooleys to focus on family and Marg’s recovery. #togetherforMargaretta
