I am building a Primary School for Maasai
children in Amboseli Kenya!
Background:
I was on safari in Amboseli Kenya in 2019. After seeing so many beautiful animals and wildlife, the Maasai guide wanted to stop by a school so that I could say hello to the children. They were all sitting on the ground in the shade under a tree with their teachers. I naively asked where the school was and he told me that the school is right here under this tree. Wow!
The kids were so happy and told me with
excitement about the school. They didn’t have any chairs or tables, no books or
stationery.
Coming from a background where all children get a good education and with
several teachers in my family, I decided
that I wanted to help them. Education is key to everything!
Buying chairs:
So the next month back in Nairobi, the
Maasai guide, my new friend Jacob, came
to visit. We went to a local market and
bought chairs, tables, blackboard and stationery. It was then all loaded onto one of the local taxies (matatus), that drove four hours back to Amboseli. Jacob later sent me pictures of happy children sitting on the new chairs, and lots of gratitude from the Maasai community.
The pandemic:
Then COVID-19 pandemic happened and the Kenyan government closed all schools.
Even this one was not allowed to stay open. Tourists stopped coming to Amboseli and the Maasai community were struggling without income.
Building the School:
Jacob contacted me again and asked me
if I would consider fundraising to build a school for the children. It would be so good to get the children under a roof to protect them from wild animals and give them
proper learning facilities. He added that
this would also really help them through the heavy rain seasons that usually lasts
for weeks, as it’s not possible to run a
school under a tree under such conditions.
I’m so blessed to come from a country where education is a right and is for
everyone, and it feels so right to take the initiative to help these children to get a
proper school building.
My mom used to be a primary school
teacher, and was passionate about
education and teaching. I want to build a
school in her memory and continue her
work. The school we’re building will give
space for 60 primary school children.
Please help me build it and maybe you
would like to visit the school sometime in
the future? Let me know:)
Thank you so much for your support!
