This is Phoenix, and I'm going to do everything I can to save her life. Her original name is Farah, meaning 'happiness' in Arabic, but I think she needs a fresh start and chance to rise from the ashes as Phoenix.
It's hard to tell from this photo how emaciated Phoenix really is. She's covered in a 3-inch thick coat - her body's attempt to keep her alive through a mild Marrakech winter. She's only 9-10 years old but looks double that - this should be the prime of her life.
I drove away from the riding school where I found her in tears. I negotiated a 'price' for her with the owner and spoke to the vet. I'm building an extra stable for her on my small farm, and trying to figure out how to manage the expense of it all. I will be bringing a 3rd (healthier!) horse home at the same time - I was only looking for one, but I simply can't leave Phoenix behind.
The costs are more than I planned for and I have no income at the moment - I wanted to start offering horseriding, but no-one will be riding Phoenix during her rehabilitation, and possibly never! Broken down:
- Sale price: £450
- Initial vet bills (vaccinations, deworming, nutritional supplements, medication, home visits): in region of £300
- Stable construction: £500
- Dentist: £60
- Hoof care: £50 (every 2 months)
- Food: £5/day, £35/week, £150/month
The cost of her 6-month rehabilitation process will therefore be approximately £2,360. I'm not expecting to raise even half of that, but I would be so, so grateful for any help at all.

And if you've read this far, whether you're able to donate or not, please share Phoenix's story with your horse/animal friends, and if you have any questions please send messages over Instagram.
Thank you ❤️
