On November 28, 2018 Ken Kahn’s life changed drastically as the Executive Director of Congregation Rodeph Sholom in Tampa, Florida. Ken went to the Dentist for an abscessed tooth. It turns out that after further testing he was diagnosed with stage 4 tongue cancer.
Ken is the most positive person around. He began attending Chemo therapy for one week on and two weeks off followed two days on and two and one half weeks off. This extreme schedule was followed for approximately eight weeks. At the same time, Ken was receiving Radiation 5 days a week in three different areas for 7 weeks. (This means Ken received 3 times the treatment most people normally receive).
Thankfully, Ken really had relatively few problems...until the very end when he ended up in ICU because of an unknown origin blood infection and an A-Flutter heart beat (this is where part of his heart is not pumping... it’s just jiggling like jell-o in a bowl. This flutter causes the blood to not circulate as efficiently as it needs to).
Suddenly Ken’s group of doctors grew to 8 specialists, none of them on our insurance plan.
Ken spent a week in ICU and a week in a regular hospital room. While in the hospital, Ken had a feeding tube placed in his body so that he could get nutrition. It was touch and go for a while, but Ken’s a fighter and he made it home.
We are hopeful the feeding tube will be removed soon. The A-Flutter Heart condition has not ‘self-corrected’ as the Doctors hoped that it would. The medication is helping, but not to the Doctors satisfaction. This means that Ken needs heart surgery.
All of this has happened in under 6 months! Yet Ken remains positive!
We appreciate your assistance to help us cover the unexpected costs associated with the unforeseen medical costs that have arisen. We are asking for your prayers and support. You are welcome to forward this.
Thank you very much.
