Help Jonathan and his family

2 years ago Romain and I travelled on holiday to the beautiful island of Busuanga, Palawan in the Philippines. There we met and Johnathan, a young man of our age who enabled us to discover the beauty of the island. He, his brother and like most of the men on the island were historically fisherman but tourism has interrupted this industry forcing change upon the island. Tourism has now become an essential income for most locals and now because of this are struggling to survive with this industry disappearing overnight due to Covid-19.

Most of these workers rely on boats rented to them from foreign countries. We, as tourists, thought we were helping local communities and were shocked to discover how much these workers are exploited. Johnathan will earn less that £4 a day from the tours he provides piloting his small boat a tough and physical labour. If no tourists utilise their services for a day that means 0 income for him to support his family. The industry is already extremely seasonal and relies so heavily on factors that they cannot control.

Johnathan lives with his wife, two children, his mother and father plus his brother’s family. They live in a makeshift hut which must be repaired every time there is heavy rain or storms. They have no access to drinkable water or electricity without leaving their home. With the current Covid-19 crisis he has no income and the daily rations the government have provided of rice and milk, cannot support his family with the bare essentials to eat. Johnathan needs support to ensure his family’s survival.

I understand we are all facing an extremely difficult battle with this invisible enemy, but I am sure not one of my friends or family reading this has yet had to think about how they will provide food or water for their loved ones. Medical care is something that they know as a family they will not receive should they be hit directly by the virus.

Johnathan does not have the luxuries we have like a phone, a bank account, a credit card or the ability to obtain a lone. He has messaged Romain in pure desperation with no link to the developed world for support. Johnathan was so kind and generous to us during our time in the Philippines and offered us so much for a man who has nothing. He has even invited our friends who have visited the island into his home as family.

Romain and I our already donating as much as we can afford right now to Johnathan and will continue to do so monthly until he can return to some sort of normality. I am sure the tourist industry will take years to recover. I understand that most of my friends have fallen into an unsure time being involved in the entertainment industry or our self-employed like I have been previously but still we all have so much more.

I am sorry to ask of help in this time but anyone that can share any financial support however big or small will help feed his family. A little goes a very long way on these islands. Romain and I are currently setting up a transfer with Western Union that he will be shortly be able to access.

Il y a 2 ans , Michael et moi sommes allés en vacances sur l’île de Busuanga dans l’archipel de Palawan aux Philippines. Nous avons rencontré Jonathan, un jeune homme de notre âge qui nous à fait découvrir les plus beaux endroits de Coron.
La plupart des habitants de Busuanga sont d’anciens pêcheurs mais le tourisme augmentant considérablement l’activité de pêche à quasiment disparu pour faire face aux afflux de touristes. Les pêcheurs ont donc du s’adapter aux changements et doivent maintenant essayer de vivre du tourisme.
La plupart des bateaux sont tenus par des hommes d’affaires qui en possèdent plusieurs ou qui ont été racheté par des étrangers pour gagner de l’argent. Les locaux sont exploités et payés une misère par les armateurs. Le salaire de Jonathan est de 400 pesos par tours ( 7euros), sachant qu’un bateau fait normalement un seul tour dans la journée. Chaque journée sans clients représente 0 euros dans ses poches.
Lui et sa famille habitent dans un cabanon sur pilotis fait de tôles et de bois en bord de mer. Ils n’ont pas accès à l’eau potable ni à l’électricité ni au tout à l’égout.

Avec la crise du Covid 19 qui touche la planète entière, le secteur du tourisme est durement impacté et Jonathan se retrouve depuis plus d’un mois sans aucun revenu et dans une misère très dure à gérer.

Il vit avec sa femme , ses deux enfants, sa mère , son frère , sa soeur et son père dans une toute petite cabane délabrée et ils n’ont plus de quoi acheter de la nourriture. Jonathan vient de dépenser tout l’argent qu’il avait mis de coté dans le but de s’acheter un jour son propre bateau.

J’ai reçu ce matin 8 avril un message de Jonathan me demandant de l’aide pour l’aider à nourrir ses enfants.
Le gouvernement envoie des rations de lait et de riz sur les îles mais cela ne suffit pas pour qu’ils mangent à leur faim.

Jonathan ne possède pas de compte en banque, de voiture, de carte de crédit, ni de télé. Il utilise pour communiquer avec moi, un vieux telephone qu’il a pu s’acheter avec de l’argent qu'il a mis de coté avec son « salaire » pour pouvoir se créer un compte facebook et pouvoir gérer plus facilement les excursions avec ses clients. 

J’ai été très touché par son message et j’avais déjà été beaucoup touché par sa gentillesse et force de vivre quand je l’ai rencontré. C’est un jeune hommevraiment adorable et généreux malgré le fait qu’il ne possède rien.

Voila maintenant 2 ans que nous recommandons à chaque amis en visite à Coron de passer par lui pour des visites privées et il nous en est toujours reconnaissant.

Avec Michael , nous souhaitons organiser une collecte de fond que nous lui transmettrons par un transfert d’argent avec Western Union, notre seul possibilité.

Je sais que nous avons tous nos propres problèmes et que nous sommes tous impacté par cette crise planétaire mais si vous le pouvez et si cette histoire vous as touché , faites un don, même si il ne s’agit que de quelques euros. Toute aide sera la bienvenue et j’espère que nous parviendrons à les aider un minimum.

A l’heure d’aujourd’hui leur activité ne reprendra pas avant Mai.
