On September 28th, 2022 Category 4 Hurricane Ian made landfall in The State of Florida, bringing with it unprecedented rainfall that lingered for over 48 hours in Volusia County. Nestled in Volusia County is the world’s most famous beach, Daytona International Speedway, and home to Basil and Joan Brasol. WithThe rainfall from Hurricane Ian was dubbed a 100-year rain, as they [meteorologists] called it. This brought forth flooding not seen in Daytona Beach, possibly ever. In the wake of the flooding and destruction, Basil and Joan Brasol lost their home of over 50 years. In the over 50 years Basil and Joan have lived in this home they have raised 8 children, 19 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Basil and Joan's home was severely damaged by the rising floodwater. Sandbags were placed around the entrances but they just weren’t enough, the area of their home received well over a foot of rain. The waterline was estimated to be nearly 6 to 8 inches deep in all rooms of the home. Due to the slow movement of the storm and the amount of rainfall, it would be well over 24 hours until the extent of the damages could be safely assessed. This is when over 50 years of life came to a halt when the destruction was finally revealed to Basil and Joan.

Within no time, numerous family members responded to help mitigate and comfort their loved ones. Phone calls were made and plans were instantly put in motion to help assess damages and figure out what assistance would be needed. Family members arrived and assisted with the removal of all of the personal contents of the home. Most of the furniture was deemed a loss and placed out for garbage collection. With the aid of family and friends, some clothing and personal belongings could be saved and placed in temporary storage.

Basil and Joan’s home was damaged mainly by flooding, and the homeowner’s policy did not have flood coverage due to rising costs and living on a strictly fixed income. FEMA declared they would assist with $11,000 and The Red Cross assisted with $500. Contractors have estimated $90,000 in damages, there is just not enough to repair the house and return home .

With your help Basil and Joan can continue seeing their grandchildren and great-grandchildren enjoy the home they have spent over 50 years building. All that is asked is please help them return home. Basil and Joan Brasol of Daytona Beach, Florida thank you very much for trying to understand the hardship this family is going through. It has been very hard on them to ask for help like this, and they greatly appreciate all forms of kindness. Thank you so much and please try to help share this with others!
