I can’t believe I’m writing this. It feels selfish to ask for help when there’s so much happening in the world, and we never imagined we’d be in this position. I don't think most families do.

A year ago, I was laid off from a job I thought I’d have forever. I was completely blindsided—I had just returned to work from a dental procedure on my lunch break when it happened. Since then, our family has been trying to stay positive despite the shock of losing half our income overnight.

This past year has been transformative in some ways... it’s given me time to connect with the world outside the 9-to-5 grind. But my inability to secure steady work has had heavy financial consequences that affect not just me, but all four of us. I am constantly searching and applying for jobs, and I will continue to do so. Still, most days it feels like we’re drowning with no way out. I’ve always believed that when the unexpected happens, something better is on the horizon, but lately, I feel like we’re losing that hope.

The amount I’m hoping to raise isn’t even close to covering all we’ve lost, but it would help keep our family afloat a little longer. After housing and utilities, there’s very little left for essentials like groceries or gas. At this moment, we simply don’t have enough to make it through the month.

Losing my job also meant losing my health insurance. As a Type 1 diabetic, that has been life-threatening. Without coverage, I was hospitalized in the ICU twice. It was my only option at the time, and while I am grateful to still be here for my family, those moments left me feeling like a burden instead of the parent and partner I want to be.
