Help Greg Heal

For anyone who knows my Daddy, knows these two things about him; he is an extremely hard worker and he takes pride in that work and providing for his family. He has always lived his life by doing exactly those two things through his company Greg Sproles Construction as a contractor and prided carpenter.

In August of this year he had to put that company aside and take care of himself for once. After two long years of pain and struggling to get out of bed and walk most days, he was finally diagnosed with avascular necrosis of the left hip. A process where there is decreased blood flow to the bone and it eventually starts to die off and deteriorate.  At 48 years old he was told he would need a total hip replacement or eventually be wheel chair bound. It sounded simple enough and after taking the month to get everything in order with his business and preparing mentally for the journey ahead, he had that surgery on September 6, 2018. Surgery was a success and went very smoothly.

My Daddy, being the fierce and stubborn man he is rocked physical therapy better than I have seen most people ever do. Within 4 weeks, yes four short weeks, he was told he could get rid of the cane and begin to slowly walk independently again. The very next morning he woke up in excruciating pain.
After two ER trips, many labs and CT scans within the days to follow he was readmitted to OLOL on October 3rd and diagnosed with Methicillin-resistant Staph (MRSA) to the hip joint. He had a second surgery on October 5, 2018 to clean out the hip joint. He stayed in the hospital for a week this time and was started on IV antibiotics as well as oral antibiotics for 6-8 weeks. Or so we thought.

Since then he has had several reactions to the antibiotics. Swelling to his feet, as well as severe pain to the point that therapy has become a set back because he can't walk as planned due to the pain the meds have caused. He has also lost muscle mass in both legs from the meds causing weakness. The doctors have changed the antibiotics twice. He has some better days and then worse again. My parents are taking it in stride and trying their best to keep afloat without my dad's usual income.

As it stands today, he is continuing with the latest antibiotics but still having pain. They are doing lab work once a week to monitor him for improvement of the infection as well as checking kidney/liver function since some of the meds can be harsh on the body. The next step if these meds do not work will be at least 2 more surgeries. One of which requires a concrete spacer to be put in while continuing IV antibiotics with 6-8 weeks of zero weight bearing (walking) on that leg. Then a second surgery to replace the hip joint again with the usual 6-8 week recovery that a normal hip replacement would take.

As a private business owner he does not have any short or long term disability policies and he was not expecting to have so many set backs and be out of work this long. And at this point, the end is not near enough in site yet.
We appreciate every ounce of help that will be given and above all send them your prayers. They are both strong people, but they are tired and being tested. Their faith remains strong because God conquers all, but you can never have too many prayer warriors.

Thank you and God Bless!
