Update December 4th:
Dawn is still home on hospice. She is losing weight but is still eating and drinking fairly well. Her body is tired and because of the liver disease she is losing blood. Her brother passed away on November 23rd and that has been weighing heavily on her mind. She was his only surviving family member besides his nephews. She had intended to be able to help with her brother’s care but they both ended up extremely sick at the same time. This has all really taken a toll on the family as well. Right now Dawn is comfortable and 85% of the time she is still in her right mind. Her personality is so beautiful and sweet. The money that comes in from this helps to put her worries at ease knowing that her family won’t become homeless or go without food. Thank you to everyone!
Update October 29th:
After spending another week in the hospital, Dawn is now home and has been placed on hospice. She has pushed her body as far as it will go and now it’s time for it to rest. She has a hospital bed in her bedroom and is very comfortable. The hospice nurse comes Monday-Friday and cleans her, washes her hair, changes her gown and makes her feel like a new woman! Dawn isn’t having any pain except when we have to move her around to change the sheets and clean her. It’s just hard on her body. She sleeps a lot so having visitors is hard but she does enjoy when someone shows up. We have a social worker working on getting her on disability so we can move her to Covington Court where her brother is. There she will get 24/7 care and hospice will still come 5 days a week as well. Taking care of a loved one who is at the end of life is hard in many different aspects. We will do our best for Dawn because she always did her best for everyone else.
Update: Things haven’t been going well. Recovery may not be an option for me at this point. I am not a candidate for a liver transplant partially because of my weight but also because of the CHF. Rehab isn’t an option for me because my condition isn’t expected to get better only worse. I have become pretty much immobile which is quite humiliating at times. Let’s just say, the firemen and I are on a first name basis these days. Whatever donations that are made going forward will be for my family and any future expenses. Thank you to everyone who has helped financially it has been greatly appreciated.
Hi, I’m Dawn and that’s my sweet Max with me. In mid April, I was at work and just felt a little off. I rounded a corner and fell forward into a wall and onto my left knee. I checked into ER and other than massive bruising, a tiny finger fracture & a contused left knee I was deemed fine. My knee was taking forever to heal, I could hardly get my left side into the shower so I missed many weeks of work. A few weeks later I fell on that knee twice more, once while in X-ray getting my knee checked and doing a chest exray as I was very short of breath. Turns out I needed hospitalized for pneumonia and early CHF. All the while having anemia from 6 weeks of post menopause bleeding combined with my fatty liver disease causing thrombocytopenia. So four days in Mercy for antibiotics, aggressive diuresis. In one week I had lost 30 lbs of water weight. I’m still off work; for 6 weeks my paychecks have been $0. I’m have to see gastroenterologist, cardiologist, gynecologist and a dietitian. I have seen a lot of generosity from friends and family and have been able to live for the past month. I’ve been sent to UAMS for placement on the liver transplant list. I have a stress test, more lab tests, an outpatient surgery with gyno coming up this next month. I’m starting to have panic attacks about becoming homeless or losing my car. I know times are tough for everyone, I’m just not used to not being able to provide for my family. Thank you for your concern and prayers.
