Hello!
I'm Will, a biology teacher at a secondary school in the Lindi region of Tanzania. I've also helped coach the few sports teams at the school: soccer, volleyball and netball (google it!). Sports are a great outlet for students here; they provide much needed structure and teach valuable lessons about teamwork and responsibility. Participation in sports has helped many of our students avoid truancy and complete their secondary school education.
I am fortunate to work with a teacher, Mr. Mtimbo (pictured above), who is a passionate and effective coach. He is the head coach of all the sports teams and gives equal time and support to boys and girls. There is very little monetary support from the school for sports, so we teachers often use our personal money in addition to our time to buy equipment, repair balls and have drinking water for games.
Together, we saw the potential for expanding the sports program at our school by constructing a basketball court. Such a court would enable more students to benefit from the sports program at our school. It would also be only the second basketball court at a school in our entire region and would allow us to host regional sports competitions, which would benefit students all across Lindi! Mr. Mtimbo attemped to raise contributions from our neighboring schools for a basketball, but due to lack of funds none were able to contribute. Despite the challenges of funding and not having a basketball court Mr. Mtimbo has already bought a basketball and started to teach a few students the basics of passing and dribbling!
Thus, I turn to you, my friends and family, to help support this project!
All of the funds raised will be used for construction of the basketball court, and the school is also contributing in the form of some raw materials and labor. The court will be made with cement and will be constructed by our town fundi (craftsman) using local materials. I hope to raise the money before May, so that construction can occur in May before the month long June break.
I've loved being a teacher here, and your support would help my students significantly. In a place with few to no luxuries, this would provide a special opportunity for my students and community. I can say with certainty that myself, my fellow teachers and my students will be full of gratitude and appreciation for your support.
Asante! (Thank you!)
