Kloe's Second Opinion

On January 7th 2014 Míla & Kloe Fernandez came into this world. Our little girls could hardly wait to meet us so they decided to come 2 months early! Due to a sudden stunt in Mílas development an immediate delivery was set in place that terrified us both. To make matters worse Kloe had developed complications with her heart which doctors had wanted her to be as close to full term as possible so she could have an immediate surgery to correct her problem. The birth of our girls was a success and they were born with out any added stress or trauma.
1 month later Míla had out grown her sister and was bottle feeding regularly. She was then cleared to come home. This day, which we will never forget the feeling, was the happiest and saddest day of our lives.  Unfortunately Kloe's heart defects had grown increasingly problematic. We had to leave her at the hospital and seperate our twins.
2 weeks after her birth she had surgery to correct her aorta which was too small for adequate blood flow. The surgery went as planned. Kloe was also born with a hole in her heart they called a VSD. Doctors monitored the hole and decided to steer clear because of her size. As time went on she began to have frequent breathing episodes where her breathing would drop drastically and she would have to breathe off of a ventilator. To make matters worse she began to throw up her feedings thus keeping her weight gain down and keeping her too weak to grow. After weeks of multiple vomiting episodes where food would get into her lungs, the decision was made to have a G tube feeding device implanted in her stomach to ensure adequate feeding and growth. In theory they believed her lungs would then grow and her breathing would stabilize. A nissen was also implanted to keep her food from coming up. She had eroded her throat to the point that if we waited any longer her vocal chords would have been completely damaged and she would have had to have a tracheotomy done. This surgery was done and she began her feedings with no vomiting. At that point Kloe had undergone 2 surgeries in 1 month. More than any infant should have to endure.
Just recently she was almost cleared to leave the hospital. We were so happy getting her things together and telling our friends and family about when she would be coming home until her breathing relapsed again. After more testing the doctors have concluded that the original VSD had become more problematic than they anticipated. In addition to the hole in heart the doctors discovered a new defect. Her mitral valve was not functioning properly. These two together can have a major effect on breathing. With so much oxygenated and unoxygenated blood mixing together, her lungs are working twice as hard and they can fill up with fluid, which had already happened once to which they're was no clear answer as to why.
At this point we are in limbo as to what is the best route to go with her heart defects. The VSD procedure can be fixed at her age now. Unfortunately the mitral valve is the major issue. They can not repair it because of Kloe's size.
As of now we are reaching out for a second opinion from the nations top rated heart doctors. Unfortunately something like this costs more than what we have. We received our first medical bill in the mail. Even with our insurance Kloe's stay at the hospital has set us back for the forseable future. We are reaching out and asking for donations to help us give her a second opinion from some of the nations best heart surgeons and doctors. We don't want to put her at any more risk than we have to anymore. Her doctors have gone above and beyond for her and we are forever greatful however a few things we feel might have been over looked during her stay.
If you help us raise the money we've requested for her, the initial portion will be paid for the opinions and the remaining balance will be applied to her on going medical bills that will incur over her first year of life. Kloe will require an oniste nurse to come to our home and monitor her variouse complications to make sure she is getting healthier.
Neither one of us have known a love like this before being that these are our first children, but the heart ache of watching our little girl struggling in her first few months of life is heartbreaking. All we want is the best for Kloe. We want her to have a chance at a full life with her sister Míla. So with that we are so gracious you have visited our page and ask that you make a small donation to getting our baby Kloe home and reunited with her twin sister. Thank you so much.
